And finally- 2009 Highlights

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Naval gazing is not generally something that we indulge in at “Blink”. We are all about looking ahead at what’s next, what’s fresh and what’s new but I suppose it could be considered rude not to spend a wee moment looking back at our favourite bits of the past year.

We should start by mentioning that 2009 was the year that the “Blink” blog was born and also the year that we started Twittering. Its been an education and we have discovered new passions for cyberspace and our our place in it. Its been an absolute joy to share with you what’s getting us stylishly hot under the collar. Thanks to all of our subscribers, Twitter pals, commenters and those of you who have been spreading the “Blink” joy.

In the fashion world in general, we have adored seeing how Balmainia has infected almost every nook and cranny of the fashion vocabulary. Its also been the year that Alber Elbaz has finally been recognized as the fashion genius that he absolutely is. So, two very different Parisian giants have been slugging it out for the top spot in incredibly different and diverse ways. Oh fashion, how we love your capriciousness! But don’t be mislead that its been all about Paris this past year…

London has been revitalized and returned to its rightful place as a serious fashion contender bringing more excitement than Paris, Milan and New York put together. The move of Fashion Week to Somerset House was brilliant. The return of many huge labels to the London catwalks was really affirming of the new found power of London. We are no longer about mad, messy and misdirected creativity. The attitude and aptitude for innovation is more alive than ever, but now it seems to have been tempered with the sort of ‘finish’ and seriousness that is sometimes overlooked or perhaps just unexpected in London. We have a whole new world of Designers and brands in London that I think are of world beating caliber. We’ll do our best to keep you in the loop of any new names as they emerge in 2010.

2009 was also the year that there were some mega themes that transcended seasons and also stretched from high to low end. Studs were EVERYWHERE! Nude was the colour story of choice from high end to high street, but was challenged for the top spot by the classic, graphic look of monochromes. If geek chic was your thing, then you were in luck with mega specs and brilliant brogues. If you are all about super spangles and high glamour, high heels then 2009 was the perfect fashion year for you too. Oh, and how could we not mention super shoulders?! Did we already mention how we love fashion’s capricious moods?

Temper Trap encouraged us to have a ssswweeettt dddiiisspppoosiiittiion and Grace Jones showed that you should never stop shaking your tooshy. We have a fabulous time reporting from some really excellent festivals at home and away. The ‘Arts’ came through with some superb huge scale exhibitions, like Pop Art at the Tate Modern, and Anish Kapoor at the Royal Academy, and we also loved discovering some mini arty moments that make London the diversely inspiration place that we are addicted to.

So what about 2010? Well, we think that this will be a very exciting time of unparalleled creativity. “Blink” will be there to tell you all about the new news. Its exciting to be feeling excited about whats to come! Bring it on!

Denim- Hip Hombre

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Here another great street shot for you, just before we wind up 2009. Oh, and its one for the boys as we have only posted a few bloke oriented things so far. Thanks to our brilliant “Blink” contributor,  Amy, for this great style spot. This guy looks pretty standard fare for Shoreditch upon first glance, but then upon second viewing there are some super stylish subtleties to his look that mean he stands out from the crowd.

First we must say that he layers well. Loving the hoodie under the denim jacket. Then you spot the subtle tones of black and blue in denim, jersey and even in the touch of tattoo that’s peaking out. Finally you get to that magnificent ‘tache and those excellent shades. Way cool…

Blink Social- The Temper Trap

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

On Monday night we headed through snow storms up to the wilds of Camden on the promise of a brilliant night out. We were not disappointed!  To warm our cockles pre-gig, post snow drifts, we headed into ‘The Blues Kitchen’ for some soul food, Southern States style. Then on down to KOKO. Its a deep red delight of a venue. We have had some stellar nights out here and knew this would be another to add to the list.

We were determined to squeeze just one more gig in before the year was out and The Temper Trap tickets have been winking at us from the notice board for months. This Melbourne based band bought some Aussie sunshine to a very chilly London evening. They did not disappoint. In fact, we think that they exceeded expectations by delivering a set that was far more rocky and raw than the album. We were even treated to a TTT version of Springsteens ‘Dancing in the Dark’! We’ll be going to see them again when they are back in the new year. Hurry back boys!

Pattern- Spring has Sprung!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

As we researched this month’s reports we had a combination of Autumn Winter 2009 product and a surprising amount of Spring 2010 starting to hit the shop floors, particularly at the high end. The exciting new product did serve to make the Winter stock look a little tired, and it also made us realize that we are oh so ready for Spring to get going.

Here’s a little taster for you. A Springy ‘amuse-bouche’ if you will. These shots are from our January print report. They are all blooming with energy and optimism. I hope that this is a good sign for the new season ahead.

New Direction- Corset is!

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The catwalks have been full of it and we have seen many Lady GaGa-a-likes strutting around town in not much more than a leotard, so underwear as outerwear is firmly back on the fashion map. The basque or corset has followed the ‘body’ by making the break into the high street arena as these shots show. Its about body con, its very 80s a la Madonna, its sexy but somehow not smutty- which we think has much to do with the vintage vibe of the styling. The beautifully detailed Sonia Rykiel collection for H&M has had a strong hand in bringing this look into the collective consciousness.

Unleash your inner Betty Page and embrace lace for a look that we think has legs into 2010 and beyond…

Blink Seasonal- You Angel

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

While we’re in a festive mood, we thought we’d treat you to this group of images that could be taken in a seasonal way- but angels aren’t just for Christmas! These are actually taken from the Winter ‘Graphics’ report and have been gathered over the past couple of months. They just seemed appropriate to share with you as we approach December 25th.

The wings on the store front of the Jeremy Scott pop up shop reflected his detailing in the trainers. At ‘Merci’ we saw a plain old wire hanger elevated to desirability with a bit of genius bending. Its a great device that crosses all sort of barriers and appeals to a broad audience, so get your wings on and channel your angelic thoughts into some cupid cute new product.

Blink Seasonal- Creative Liberty

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Now for our final Christmas award which goes to Liberty. This is a special commendation for humor and glamour combined to create a fabulous fashion take on Christmas decs. Yes, we do bang on about Liberty at every opportunity, but they are truly one of the most inspiring retailers that we have here in dear old Blighty. Oh, and I’m not on the payroll (but wouldn’t refuse a Christmas stocking full of Liberty vouchers if anyone’s wondering!).

How do these manage to still look chic?

Details- Glitter Ball

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

If there are any sequins left unattached to a piece of this season’s collections, then its a miracle. This has been a high time for purveyors of paillettes. We have been dazzled by spangles at every level of the fashion food chain this Autumn/ Winter, and judging by the Spring/ Summer 2010 collections, its a look with legs.

Its particularly hot for dresses, but full on embellishment looks good across all categories. Total coverage in one tone looks great. Pattern and placed designs look cool. Black is massive, but we really like the brighter options. Mixed scales of sequins look innovative, as do matte finishes.

Here are some of our favourite looks…

Blink Seasonal- Bold Baubles

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Taking second place in our festive chart is Selfridges London, narrowly missing the top spot that we awarded to Carnaby Street. We love the huge scale and brightly coloured inflatable baubles that drift up the side of the full height central escalator. These have a touch of  Takashi Murakami about them. There is a lovely comedy about these decorations, which fits in with the pantomime feel of the window schemes. They put a festive smile on our face.

Accessories- Chic Chapeaux

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

As we were putting together the Winter ‘Accessories’ report, we noticed a building trend for beautiful hats. They have a formal, vintage feel about them reflecting the more ‘dressed up’ and tailored feel that’s coming through. These hats are certainly not “with jeans”. This is about a sharper silhouette balanced with considered, refined detailing. This is an exciting indicator of a real sea change in fashion and styling.
