Blink Events- Intense Arts

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Thanks to our intrepid “Blink” contributors, Tilly and Natalie for this post-

In December we took a trip to Vyner Street in Bethnal Green to take a look at the latest exhibitions. This is a location for all interested in seeing up and coming artists in lots of different and intimate gallery spaces. This locale has been coined London’s Contemporary Art District with a variety of galleries set side by side, all catering to those interested in contemporary art with an edgy flavour. Last month’s shows saw artists take a scaled-down approach, creating small paintings, sculptures and films with humorous overtones.

Once you have had your cultural fill of free art, why not pop round the corner to Broadway Market for great food and vintage goodies. If your in the mood for something a little more upscale, why not have a cocktail in our favorite East London locations, Bistroteque.

Blinking in the Snow- Anti Cold, Pro Style part 2

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

As the super snowy weather continued, we continued to spot some stylish solutions the big question- “How can you look fabulous and stay warm?”. Here are some big scale, bold looks as well as something a little more subtle and retro. Take your pick on whether you want to be quietly warm or whether you’re all about rocking chunky texture and bold pattern in a bid to be cozy.

Thanks to everyone who agreed to stand still in the sub zero arctic winds so that we could take your photo.

Blink Events- Mutate

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Here’s a great post from our brilliant Blinkers, Natalie and Tilly. Thanks girls!

Under the Westway this Christmas there was an unexpected treat for the shoppers in Portobello. This year Mutate Britain (One Foot in the Grove) migrated from Shoreditch to Ladbroke Grove and featured an eclectic and unexpected array of underground street art which ranged from huge, fire-breathing mechanical sculptures to tongue-in-cheek graffiti, prints, ceramics, furniture, installation, glass, murals, books and even pole-dancing robots! This was a fantastic show of all things beautiful but deadly.

This art event was created and collated by The Mutoid Waste Company and The Cordy House Family who were determined to take art out of the rarefied atmosphere of a formal gallery and into a far more relaxed space where it could appeal to a much broader cross section. Mix this with the urban backdrop and a Grove appropriate sound track and you have an event that was more like a festival atmosphere than a traditional art space. Brilliant.

Blinking in the Snow- Anti Cold, Pro Style

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Its been a stylistically challenging January so far. We aren’t feeling quite in tune with the Spring collections in store as the outdoors is clothed in drifts of snow and ice and Britain is stunned by some of the coldest temperatures on record. Its tempting just to put all of your clothes on at once to battle the elements, but we have spotted some cool, but cozy, stylistas out and about in town who have found all together more fashionable alternatives to Michelin Man puffas and Fulham farmer wellie boots…

Blink Inspiration- Upcycling with the Skip Sisters

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Here we have another guest post, this time it’s thanks to our brilliant “Blink” contributer, Amy Becker Burnett:

Make do and mend is well on trend for 2010, and that makes the Skip Sisters ahead of the curve. Six creatively energetic South London based artists formed this design group three years ago and have been lovingly restoring, recycling and re-creating from unwanted things ever since. Ranging from  cuff links made from old stamps and tiny toys, handbags made from vintage underwear and cushion covers embellished with antique medals and broach’s, their work has kitsch, quirky and retro feel. It’s quaint without being twee.

A Skip Sister’s exhibition is a treasure trove of vintage dresses, unique home wear and contemporary art pieces. You’ll find anything from clocks made from 70’s vinyls to abstract paintings in sardine tins and beautiful felt bird sculptures with kitchen fork claws and grater tails. In such a throw-away society, excessive production and increased availability of cheap products means we’ve lost incentive to repair or recycle. As designers and makers, this fashion forward six-some are spot on with their waste not want not approach to ‘upcycling’, art, fashion and interiors…

Blink Update- Going Soft

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

We started the New Year by launching a new report. We are very excited to introduce our ‘Soft Wovens’ report to the portfolio. Here at “Blink” we are fans of fabulous textiles, so this is treat for us and any like us! Are there any like us? We do hope so!!!

The report is a celebration of all unstructured woven product, with some great close ups of detail so that you can really appreciate the care lavished on these looks. As usual, as well as great current product from high end to high street brands, there is vintage and street shots. Here is one of the delicious street shots from the inaugural report. This features our super stylish stylist friend, Zoe. We spotted her at the best party of 2009, rocking one of the best looks of the night, if not of the whole year! At first sight we thought this was a stunning maxi dress, but as Zoe shimmied past we noticed that this was in fact a fabulous, vintage, blouson jump suit.
