Harvey Nichols‘ windows are looking completely fabulous this week. Back in the 90’s, when this store was THE fashion destination and Selfridges or Liberty were merely functional ‘department stores’, Harvey Nics windows were an event in themselves. Winning awards for their brilliantly creative approach. I think I could be right in saying that they were one of the innovators of using store window space as a totally creative area, building fantasy fashion playgrounds where the product was almost an aside. We think the current VM team is doing a sterling job in replicating that excitement.
The current scheme features this amazing dress constructed wholly from wooden pegs (hence the post title!), alongside a piano that seemed to be made from cassette tapes and a sports car made from battalions of tiny plastic soldiers. Why? Who cares! It looks fabulous and that’s got to be 99% of what fashion is about.

This is another great look that we wanted to share with you from the last “Blink” print report. Just so that you all feel nicely back in a Summer moment after yesterday’s Autumnal post, here’s a perfectly styled High Summer statement. Its not on a real live person this time. This is in fact the work of the award winning VM team at Harvey Nichols.
Its a look that we have been talking about in our print reports for some time. ‘Ethnic’ prints pop up to varying degrees every Summer, but this time there has been a fresh approach, mainly through styling. This is a really energetic look when you blend references, scales and techniques, like a global traveler! Its hard to express that when showing you close ups of singular prints, but we think you could pretty much take any combination from a global grab bag of references and techniques to create the look.
Here Harvey Nics have blended some print masters to create a really pacey statement with items from Marni, Dries van Noten and Jonathan Saunders.

So, we posted about the natural variations on this theme last week, but then we were struck by the amount of hyper-colour skin looks that we had in our stash. These are a little punky, a little pop art and a lot of fabulousness. It takes a little more chutzpah to rock these super colourful looks, compared to the naturally neutral variations on the theme, but the impact is worth the effort.
Go wild in the city this Summer with one of these amazing prints worked back with globally inspired jewelery and simple khakis. You’ll look ggggrrrrrreat!

Here’s a selection of fabulous designs from our September ‘Print’ report. We love the energy captured in these, reminding us of classic action paintings from the likes of Jackson Pollock. Put away the computer and break out your paintbrushes to create this look.
Jonathan Saunders is the one to watch for inspiration in this look. We love his Autumn collection for its bold combination of colour, pattern and silhouette.

Another furry focused post- not that we’re obsessed or anything!
Shaggy seems to be a key descriptive for the new Autumn product. Its a great new way to look at volume and proportion. It’s ultra light and super soft. Li Edelkoort incited us all to “dress like clouds’. Well, I vote we go one better and dress like a pom pom instead.

I guess this could be the absolute opposite to the ’studs’ story, although these bows aren’t super sweet. Some are quite coy, but many have a certain architectural or modern quality. Scale is super important. If in doubt, go large!
This is the perfect finishing touch. Just treat yourself like a life size gift to the world of fashion with a beautiful bow on top, or round the middle, or decorating your ankle, or on your bag…

Decoration has lost some of its decorum and embraced the dark side. We love the edgy touch that studs bring, taking a style from prissy to punky. This works back to the self styled and customized story that’s been emerging, as well as reflecting yet another touch of the 80’s.
