Events- Little London Fields, part 1: Details

Monday, August 16th, 2010

On the 7th August, one of London’s hottest style spots got even hotter! London Fields in East London hosted the newest addition to the London based festival roster, the very lovely Little London Fields, a brilliant new, free music and arts festival.

Approaching the site through the throngs of people on Broadway Market, perusing the beautiful vintage and handmade fashion stalls, mouthwatering local food stalls as well as the quirky shops that line the street; there was a tangible buzz in the air. Inside London Fields, Festival goers lounged on the grass enjoying the sounds, sights and cider in the park. The festival was a fabulous showcase of new and up and coming music maestros, performance collectives, artists and designers. Sadly our British weather blighted what was otherwise an idyllic Summer afternoon in the park. Umbrellas came out in the crowds and others ran for cover (under trees, into tents, nearby cafes and pubs). Yet the showers didn’t last too long and in traditional British spirit the festivities carried on into the evening with a plethora of after parties to choose from.

The eclectic and alternative selection of entertainment included some of the best up and coming bands like the Brighton based synth-pop band, Mirrors and Hackney’s very own delicious Black Cherry. The Carhartt sponsored disco tent was the perfect place for booty shaking to top tunes from Cut n Shut Disco. We were very tempted to part with cash in the lovely Arts and Crafts Marquee- especially loving James Brown’s prints.

The debonair folk in attendance certainly stepped out in style, sporting some gorgeously considered and studiously self styled looks. Looking at our shots of the festival goes to show the East is undeniably the life blood of London street fashion.  We are starting this week of Little London Fields posts with a close up look at the details that make a look a ‘LOOK’! We have so many posts for you from this event that we are even posting on a Monday, which is very unusual for us, and we’ll have some double bubble two post days to come too. Hold on to your hats, this could be inspiration overload!

Enjoy this post on Little London Fields and click here for more posts on events that “Blink” has found interesting, exciting and inspiring!

Thanks Cat for the genius shots and great reporting!

Events- Field Day part 2: in Colour

Friday, August 13th, 2010

So, here’s the second in our posts from Field Day, and this one focuses on some brilliantly colourful looks. Black was probably still the strongest colour choice, and denim was a big look too- especially as cut off shorts, but we think that hot colour, print and pattern have a special place at a festival. Its a time to wear something that you may think is too bright or bold for everyday, but in a festival field we think the brighter the better, baby!

Events- Secret Garden Party part 3: Black and Gold

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Its double bubble today on the “Blink” blog. Two posts in one day! That’s going some, but we have so much festi joy to share with you this week, it’s the only way to go…

So, last but not least from Secret Garden Party we have a few final looks to share with you. We’ve called this ‘Black and Gold’ in reference to the common colour theme from this eclectic selection of shots. Two are tied by animal print. The other shows how stunningly scaled accessories can make a look. So, that’s it from us for Secret Garden Party 2010. Already looking forward to next years event!

Events- Secret Garden Party part 2: So festi, so nice

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

So, after setting the scene with yesterdays post, today we have some great Secret Garden Party style shots split into two posts- bit size chunks of fashion joy! From the theatrical yesterday to some slightly less ‘dress up’ looks today. They sum up this festivals mood of cool abandon, something a little off centre and more eclectic. Bright pattern, retro feel graphics, the ubiquitous denim shorts, maxi’s, minis and playsuits. Fill your boots and enjoy!

Events- Camp Bestival, Part 2: Style

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

So, following yesterday’s ’scene setting’ Camp Bestival post we now have some style insight for you.

In between the fairytale themed fancy dressing up, we managed to spot some great looks at Camp Bestival. It was a mixture of festival standards- great denim shorts, pretty pattern and we were particularly impressed with the boys who pushed the boat out too (mostly embracing their inner rock star or ladylike side!). Its an excuse to cut loose and go for bright colour, eclectic layers, theatrical make up and something a little more extreme than your everyday. If only your Monday to Friday wardrobe looked like this, wouldn’t the office be a far more inspirational and exciting place to be?

Events- 1234 Festival, Shoreditch

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

On Saturday 24th a few of our coolest “Blinkettes” headed down to the 1234 festival in Shoreditch. This fringe festival played host to over 40 bands and DJ collectives across four stages so there was plenty of choice in this years line up which features names like Rolo Tomassi, Dum Dum Girls, These New Puritans and Kids on Bridges- as well as inimitable Peter Hook. We think it was well worth the £20 ticket price to have this kind of festival feeling right on our doorstep.

As anticipated from the location, it was a brilliant place to style spot, with the achingly cool East London crowd rocking their best ‘laissez faire’ looks (we know you were all secretly planning your outfits for days, but don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone). There was lots of 90’s grunge- high waisted denim cut offs with DM’s and dark lipstick. Very Alice Dellal/ Courtney Love. We also spotted a few vintage romantics- bowler hats, ankle sock, boots and vintage ‘dress up’. Last but not least, the usual festival classics- that timeless Boho rock chick in floaty dresses with biker boots, antique jewelery, tousled locks and pouch bags.

Here’s a few of our favourite shots for you, and there’s more to follow over the next couple of days! Thanks to Amy and Jessica for the great work.

Inspiration: A Field of Dreams

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

What a whirlwind on the “Blink” blog this week. First we posted about Peckham, then we were in Copenhagen and now we have a post from sunny East Sussex. Will the glamor never end!

As tweeted on Monday, I was up bright and early on Tuesday to head down to Ardingly. I know you’re thinking what could be in a small and twee country village to get me out of a cozy bed and away from the computer for a day. Well, something special let me tell you!

Ardingly is fast becoming less of the insider secret that it once was. Its a massive antiques trade fair with over 1,500 stalls set through the fields and sheds of the South of England Showground. I come from a long line of rummagers, negotiators and eagle eyed spotters- better known as antique dealers to the general public- so this is my idea of heaven. Its a great place to find inspiration in things you didn’t even expect to strike a chord with you. Suddenly you realize that those really massive, clunky German pottery vases in strange, bright glazes are really quite beautiful, or maybe its about a fantastic graphic spotted on a retro Belgian poster. There is more direct fashion inspiration if required too, with many stalls specializing in textiles, amazing historical clothing and accessories. Its a very tempting place so I would use a phrase of my Grandmother’s “Keep your hand on your ha’penny” (actually I’m not sure she was talking about money, but anyway…). If you are set for a spend up, cash is king, but many stalls take a cheque and even credit cards!

Here are some shots of things we thought were beautiful and inspirational, and some of them even came home with us…

Blink Travels: OMG CPH

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Our brilliant “Blink” contributor, Asta, has headed to Copenhagen for the Summer (we are not at all jealous… much!) and to our delight she has agreed to do a little work, capturing some of the spirit of this stylish city and sending it back to us. And here we are sharing it with you!

So, in the real world, its full on Summer so we have some great sunshiny looks for you. However, in the retail world its Autumn, so get ready for some seasonal schizophrenia in the next few reports and over the next few weeks on the blog.

Pattern: Globetrotting

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

This is another great look that we wanted to share with you from the last “Blink” print report. Just so that you all feel nicely back in a Summer moment after yesterday’s Autumnal post, here’s a perfectly styled High Summer statement. Its not on a real live person this time. This is in fact the work of the award winning VM team at Harvey Nichols.

Its a look that we have been talking about in our print reports for some time. ‘Ethnic’ prints pop up to varying degrees every Summer, but this time there has been a fresh approach, mainly through styling. This is a really energetic look when you blend references, scales and techniques, like a global traveler! Its hard to express that when showing you close ups of singular prints, but we think you could pretty much take any combination from a global grab bag of references and techniques to create the look.

Here Harvey Nics have blended some print masters to create a really pacey statement with items from Marni, Dries van Noten and Jonathan Saunders.

Pattern: Computer Generated Genius

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

We are really enjoying the new wave of prints that seems to embrace both the deliciously textural, painterly prints that are out there and the sharper, almost computer generated looks have been building up too. Its a creative new take on traditional geometrics and one that makes quite an impact. Scale is still super important, with bigger being better. There is blurred softness, depth with levels of shade and tone on some designs which seem to be quite artistically hand drawn, but as seen by the way art is embracing the computer (did you see the beautiful work Hockney created on his ipad?) its so hard to tell what has been created with traditional techniques and what is the result of cleverly using technology…

Here are some of our favourites extracted from the June ‘Print’ report. If you’d like to see more, why not contact your nearest agent?
