Friday Fun: We’ve got you pegged

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Harvey Nichols‘ windows are looking completely fabulous this week. Back in the 90’s, when this store was THE fashion destination and Selfridges or Liberty were merely functional ‘department stores’, Harvey Nics windows were an event in themselves. Winning awards for their brilliantly creative approach. I think I could be right in saying that they were one of the innovators of using store window space as a totally creative area, building fantasy fashion playgrounds where the product was almost an aside. We think the current VM team is doing a sterling job in replicating that excitement.

The current scheme features this amazing dress constructed wholly from wooden pegs (hence the post title!), alongside a piano that seemed to be made from cassette tapes and a sports car made from battalions of tiny plastic soldiers. Why? Who cares! It looks fabulous and that’s got to be 99% of what fashion is about.

Details- Glitter Ball

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

If there are any sequins left unattached to a piece of this season’s collections, then its a miracle. This has been a high time for purveyors of paillettes. We have been dazzled by spangles at every level of the fashion food chain this Autumn/ Winter, and judging by the Spring/ Summer 2010 collections, its a look with legs.

Its particularly hot for dresses, but full on embellishment looks good across all categories. Total coverage in one tone looks great. Pattern and placed designs look cool. Black is massive, but we really like the brighter options. Mixed scales of sequins look innovative, as do matte finishes.

Here are some of our favourite looks…

Blink Seasonal- Bold Baubles

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Taking second place in our festive chart is Selfridges London, narrowly missing the top spot that we awarded to Carnaby Street. We love the huge scale and brightly coloured inflatable baubles that drift up the side of the full height central escalator. These have a touch of  Takashi Murakami about them. There is a lovely comedy about these decorations, which fits in with the pantomime feel of the window schemes. They put a festive smile on our face.

Selfridges- Super Furry Animals

Friday, July 17th, 2009

As the new stock drops the sad sale windows are replaced by exciting new season schemes. Selfridges have taken their 100 years birthday celebration windows and projected them into the future, whilst cleverly showcasing current product. These new displays feature some great ideas, and we particularly loved this variation on the fur coat. As noted in our previous post, fur was a disturbingly prominent look on and off of the Autumn 2009 catwalks. Its not a look we had planned to ever wear, but Selfridges have shown that there can be a way forward for the animal lovers amongst us.

This wasn’t attributed to any particular designer so we think that the VM team must have raided the toy department and created this super teddy-tastic look.

Animal Magic

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

In past month or so, we have seen a veritable zoo pass before our eyes in the windows of London’s stores. This seems to be the fashionable display theme of choice. We think this kooky and kitsch look at animal life has added a little sneaky smile behind all the serious style statements. Grrrr!
