Events- Little London Fields, part 5: Shadey Lady

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

And second in our accessories focused set of posts from Little London Fields, we look at some super shades. Sunnies have long been the ultimate badge of cool in fashion terms and we really love the diversity and individuality shown on the crowd at this small but perfectly formed fest. In recent Summers, the choice of whats hot and whats not in terms of sunglasses has been a narrow field of vision between Aviators and Wayfarers. We are delighted to say that this is no longer the case. Bring on big, bold, vintage, binocular style rounded shapes and colourful looks.

Events- Secret Garden Party part 2: So festi, so nice

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

So, after setting the scene with yesterdays post, today we have some great Secret Garden Party style shots split into two posts- bit size chunks of fashion joy! From the theatrical yesterday to some slightly less ‘dress up’ looks today. They sum up this festivals mood of cool abandon, something a little off centre and more eclectic. Bright pattern, retro feel graphics, the ubiquitous denim shorts, maxi’s, minis and playsuits. Fill your boots and enjoy!

Events- Secret Garden Party, The Secret’s Out!

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

We have been keeping Cat very busy having fun. On Thursday 22nd July she headed off on a secret mision for us. Her challenge was to track down the Secret Garden Party. Its an independent , not for profit event and has no sponsorship (and little advertising – even the locals don’t know about it!) started in 2004 by four friends. Secret Garden Party has bloomed in size and popularity becoming one of the ‘must attend’ festivals for those in the know.

The event is held in the Cambridgeshire countryside, set in the sublime grounds of a Georgian farmhouse near Huntingdon, in a 10 acre landscaped garden, perfectly placed for maximum beauty bordering a river and lake.

Some of the better prepared attendees had donned gorgeous swimsuits teamed with cut off jeans and boots, making it easy to strip off for a quick dip from the floating dance floor and into the swimming lake. If you didn’t feel like jumping straight in, you could still enjoy the water by heading off in one of the rowing boats.

Themed as ‘Fact or Fiction’ SGP was brimming with eclectic creativity in the sunny Summer weather. Culinary delights matched the visual feast; bands playing suspended in the trees, bales of hay made ad hoc seating areas whilst a 19th century steam powered traction engine served drinks from its carriages and served as a mobile disco. The style of the attendees was just as eclectic and inspiration from every decade were evident in decadent vintage outfits from flowing 70’s floral dresses to kittenish 50’s swimsuits and 1920’s elegance.

Gorillaz Sound System headlined with an impressive visual display, plus Mercury Rev, ska legends the Skatalites, Goldheart Assembly, Darwin DeezExample, Goldierocks, and many more. The stunning Marina & The Diamonds got the crowd singing early into the first night and I Blame Coco drew a stylish crowd too. Fireworks and Chinese lanterns added extra sparkle and Saturday night was lit up with the ceremonial burning of the floating dance floor.

This is our first of three post from this event, and we decided to start with some looks that embrace the more theatrical and eccentric looks from this festival. Enjoy!

Events- 1234, Part 3: You’ve got Sole!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

And last but not least from our style spotting bonanza at the 1234 festival, we have an accessories focused post. Its one that takes me down memory lane..

We’ve been spotting the odd crepe soled shoe, otherwise known as ‘brothel creepers’ or ‘beetle crushers’, on some cool boys and few girls around town, but Saturday’s event sealed this shoe styles ascent back into fashion consciousness. We have also been aware of Dr Martens coming through again, but have felt a little unconvinced- again, until Saturday. You girls know how to rock a manly shoe with style and panache!

I lived in a much loved pair of crepe soled shoes when I was doing my Art foundation many moons ago (suffice to say that it was the late 80’s!). I can even remember buying them on Floral Street in Covent Garden. Was there a Rokit store there then, opposite Jones? I thought I looked so cool in them with my Dicky Dirts dungarees, a pair of Paul Smith silk boxer shorts and a vintage bustier. I must look out a photo… or maybe not!

Events- 1234, Part 2: Shoreditch Shorts

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

So, we hope you liked yesterdays post cos there’s more! My team did such a great job at 1234 that we have lots and lots of great shots to share. Today its all about denim shorts, cut off so high in many cases that the pocket bags are showing. Its a look we love, and may well be rocking if there’s sunshine in Lulworth this weekend at Camp Bestival!

Events- 1234 Festival, Shoreditch

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

On Saturday 24th a few of our coolest “Blinkettes” headed down to the 1234 festival in Shoreditch. This fringe festival played host to over 40 bands and DJ collectives across four stages so there was plenty of choice in this years line up which features names like Rolo Tomassi, Dum Dum Girls, These New Puritans and Kids on Bridges- as well as inimitable Peter Hook. We think it was well worth the £20 ticket price to have this kind of festival feeling right on our doorstep.

As anticipated from the location, it was a brilliant place to style spot, with the achingly cool East London crowd rocking their best ‘laissez faire’ looks (we know you were all secretly planning your outfits for days, but don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone). There was lots of 90’s grunge- high waisted denim cut offs with DM’s and dark lipstick. Very Alice Dellal/ Courtney Love. We also spotted a few vintage romantics- bowler hats, ankle sock, boots and vintage ‘dress up’. Last but not least, the usual festival classics- that timeless Boho rock chick in floaty dresses with biker boots, antique jewelery, tousled locks and pouch bags.

Here’s a few of our favourite shots for you, and there’s more to follow over the next couple of days! Thanks to Amy and Jessica for the great work.

Inspiration: A Field of Dreams

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

What a whirlwind on the “Blink” blog this week. First we posted about Peckham, then we were in Copenhagen and now we have a post from sunny East Sussex. Will the glamor never end!

As tweeted on Monday, I was up bright and early on Tuesday to head down to Ardingly. I know you’re thinking what could be in a small and twee country village to get me out of a cozy bed and away from the computer for a day. Well, something special let me tell you!

Ardingly is fast becoming less of the insider secret that it once was. Its a massive antiques trade fair with over 1,500 stalls set through the fields and sheds of the South of England Showground. I come from a long line of rummagers, negotiators and eagle eyed spotters- better known as antique dealers to the general public- so this is my idea of heaven. Its a great place to find inspiration in things you didn’t even expect to strike a chord with you. Suddenly you realize that those really massive, clunky German pottery vases in strange, bright glazes are really quite beautiful, or maybe its about a fantastic graphic spotted on a retro Belgian poster. There is more direct fashion inspiration if required too, with many stalls specializing in textiles, amazing historical clothing and accessories. Its a very tempting place so I would use a phrase of my Grandmother’s “Keep your hand on your ha’penny” (actually I’m not sure she was talking about money, but anyway…). If you are set for a spend up, cash is king, but many stalls take a cheque and even credit cards!

Here are some shots of things we thought were beautiful and inspirational, and some of them even came home with us…

Accessories: Nick at Liberty

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

We were passing by Liberty, peering in the windows as usual, contemplating what we were going to score at the Summer sale preview when we were utterly distracted by this stunning piece of shoe art, shoes, art… Well, whether this is about the shoes or the stunning vintage Liberty Art Fabrics ‘Bounty’ and ‘Santa Maria’ prints, its a winning combination.

We have long admired the work of Mr Kirkwood, and this collaboration as part of Liberty’s year long Flower Power event, has resulted in a three piece collection of limited edition, foot oriented joy.

So, plans to have a spend up in the sale went out of the window, and instead we started working out a crack pot scheme that would result in imminent ownership of the stunning Bounty Platform sandal…

Blink Events- Vintroville

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

At the end of May, “Blink” was very cordially invited to the opening of the new Vintroville store on Hackney Road.

Vintroville is all about carefully selected vintage clothes chosen by the two owners, Meryl Fernandes and Laura McAlpine, combined with a few one-off pieces by a handful young designers who upcycle and rework vintage.  We particularly liked the lovely embroidered vintage knitwear from LauraLaura. The selection includes glamorous dresses, classic blouses, cool jackets, accessories as well as some menswear, and all of the vintage is cleaned and pressed to sweet smelling perfection before being sold. Something many musty and dusty vintage boutiques should take note of! The stores handwriting, across both the vintage and reworked items, is delicate and quite feminine (in a cool Shoreditch way…), and feels really well edited.

This delightful little treasure trove of a shop is located at 205 Hackney Road, next to Columbia Road and a two minute walk away from Shoreditch High Street.

Thanks for the invite ladies, and we’ll be back to do some more shopping very soon! Thanks also to Asta for pulling this post together.

Blink Events- First Thursdays

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

The first Thursday of every month the galleries of East London’s Vyner Street open their doors for an evening of browsing, mooching and possibly even purchasing!  We hadn’t been over this way since December so thought it was a good opportunity to get back and see whats going on.

From around 5pm until late you can wander around and enjoy a diverse selection of art across the multitude of galleries set conveniently side by side in what has been coined London’s Contemporary Art District.  The galleries on Vyner Street are all showing young, innovative, international artists. The small street gradually filled up with a stylishly, arty crowd as the evening wore on.  Beside the attraction of the cultural fix, it’s a good place to hang out over a cheap beer with friends.
The next First Thursday will be on the 3rd of June. By then we should have lots of sunshine so it could be a great way to spend a warm summer evening. We’ll see you there…
