“Blink” Music: Ibeyi ‘Mama Says’

This #MusicMonday is part of our 2015 predictions series as we are predicting great things for Ibeyi in the year ahead.

These super talented, French-Cuban twin sisters are the daughters of the late, great Cuban percussionist Anga Diaz, a conguero who played with the Buena Vista Social Club. I’m sure that this musical heritage has deeply impacted on these young artists, but they have taken that inspiration and woven it into a sound that is utterly innovative, perhaps best explained as deeply soulful however not quite soul in it’s traditional sense.

Lisa-Kaïndé plays the piano and sings. Naomi backs her vocals and plays percussions. Ibeyi sings in English and the language of Yoruba, a Nigerian language that travelled to Cuba via slavery in the 1700s. Ibeyi, pronounced ee-bey-ee, is Yoruba for “twins” so now you know.

We have chosen ‘Mama Says’ as our feature track, their most recent release. It is dreamy, haunting, considered, stripped back but still complex. Every time I listen to it, I hear something new. I can’t wait to hear more from these two.

Enjoy! Lucy
