Happy New Year!

Monday, January 4th, 2016

Well its the official first day back at work for most of us today so this is a quickie to help you through your first Monday morning of 2016, as well as for us to set the scene for our upcoming blog posts.

We chose this image to as all of us at Blink Towers are feeling the need to put down our mental (and physical in some cases!) baggage and start the new year with space to think freshly, respond in new ways and approach our daily working lives and our personal lives in a new way, setting new patterns. We thought maybe you might be feeling the same?

Rather than any New Years Resolutions we are going to try New Day resolutions and see if that works for us better. Less chance of resolution fail guilt that way too I hope! The though is that these little daily things mount up and cumulatively might have a bigger overall effect.

Aside from that being a personal mission, we have also applied that to Blink London Consultancy ltd as a whole. We restructured the business late last year so that we cab focus more on the parts of the business that we love the most- the creative consultancy, teaching and this blog of ours. we hope that you can feel the little changes we are making, as well as soon see some of the bigger changes too.

We are looking forward to having you along for the ride as we continue in our mission to inspire and inform all of our readers, followers, friends and partners across all of our channels.

Bella Illustrations, the newest addition to the Blink London family

Bella Illustrations

We have a new baby! Not a literal, actual being type human baby. We have a new Blink London business baby! Please welcome our brand new brand, Bella Illustrations. When you are looking at something rather lovely, feel free to say “Oh yes, that reminds me of those fabulous Bella Illustrations fashion drawings.” and as your friends look enquiringly at you, congratulate yourself on having the inside track on this new source for original and limited edition fashion artwork.

I must give my family kudos for inspiring me to launch Bella Illustrations because as a fashion designer, these are just the tools of my trade, but they assure me that these are things of beauty that deserve to be shared. Over the past 20 years I have been working out my best way of expressing my design ideas, and this is the result. These are drawn with absolute love, dedication and passion for the fashion world and my place in it. My favourite work days are my drawing days and so to have a legitimate excuse to have more drawing days is an absolute dream come true!

I’m offering some one off, unique, original fashion drawings that are mostly monochrome but detailed with skin tone to help the silhouette of the designs shine out. These above and below are on the Bella Illustrations Etsy shop right now, in our ‘Three Looks’ series.

I’m also creating some limited edition drawings which are inspired by vintage fashion looks. These are drawn up and then printed on to heavy cartridge paper. I then hand colour these with watercolours so actually each one is still quite unique- and there are only ever 5 of each drawing produced.

This one, with the embroidered bodice and full tulle skirt, is inspired by a 1950’s Balenciaga design. And the look below is also from the 1950’s but is a Dior design. The next may well be a 1970’s suit although I’m also being tempted by something far more historical like a 1920’s flapper dress or a heavily detailed Victorian frock…

Oh, and are you wondering about the name ‘Bella Illustrations’? Yes, I am Lucy to all of you and to everyone in my life- aside from to my family. Bella is a family nickname, given to me by by big brother. As this is a far more personal aspect of my business it felt natural to give it a far more personal name. I do hope that you like it.

Please take a look at my Etsy shop to see more of what I’m doing. It’s the only place online where you can buy my work. There will be more one offs and limited editions being added regularly, so keep an eye on things. I’m also creating some custom fashion drawings to order too (yay, more excuses to draw!!!). If you’d like to see more from Bella Illustrations, including some ‘artwork in process’ images, follow Bella Illustrations on Instagram too.

Before I get to the brilliant Blink ‘Intro to Blogging’ workshop, let me have a little moment of self-indulgence…Lucy Williams of Blink London talking about Blogging at Babington House, Soho House, learn to blog, Lucy Williams, Babington House hotel, blogging workshop, creative blogging

Babington House is having me back to give another talk about blogging and social media. It’s always a lovely thing to get a repeat booking, so thanks so much to the Soho House team for that- and an advanced thanks to all the members who are coming along on Monday.

In addition to that lovely news, last night was the final part of October’s ‘Introduction to Blogging and Social Media’ workshop. It was another great success (if I say so myself!). I LOVE delivering my workshops and it is a great way of me keeping motivated and energised as well as imparting that enthusiasm to my workshop attendees. It was a wonderfully diverse group combining a whole range of individuals who would like to either kick off a blogging journey, or progress on the journey that they have already started.

I’ve published the November workshop dates. Have a look here to find out more about the workshop and how to book your spot. This will be the final workshop of 2015 by the way (no pressure, but the groups are small so don’t hang about if you’d like to come!).Blink London blogging workshop, learn with Blink London, Blink London, fashion blog, London blogging lessons, lifestyle blog

“Blink” Workshops: Be a Blogging Success!

Monday, October 5th, 2015

Last week I heard from one of my previous “Intro to Blogging and Social Media” workshop attendees. Karen Alexander, a nutritionist, dropped me a line to let me know that her website and blog have gone live saying:

“I have started my blog which was in a big part due to your course giving me the confidence I needed to get going”

You can check out her great work here at Nutritious Roots. Take a look and you’ll understand why I feel so proud. Yay! A great example of how to differentiate yourself, express who you are and help potential clients to discover you- and ultimately choose you and your services above others who may be offering something similar.

“Blink” Events: Learn about Blogging and Social Media with Blink

Thursday, July 2nd, 2015

Exciting times at Blink Towers just now. On Monday I was invited to give a talk on Blogging and Social Media at the Charity Retail Association‘s Annual Conference, held at Keele University. It was an amazing event and a wonderful insight into this very important world. Thanks to all of you who came along, and for all of the lovely feedback. Can’t wait to hear about all of your progress.

I was also a judge for the ‘Innovation in Charity Retailing’ award and was utterly amazed at all of the brilliant, creative and, well, innovative approaches being undertaken by charities of all scales. Congratulations to Scope for winning this particular award. Here’s their winning campaign #StripforScope, inspired by the classic Levis laundrette ads and featuring the rather lovely model, Jack Eyers.

Then on the 13th July I will be heading down to Somerset to give a talk about Social Media at the beautiful Babington House. If you are a member then please do come along. It’s a 60 minute affair talking about the differences in the key platforms and how you can make the most of them. It’s a great introductory session which should leave everyone feeling able to flash those ‘@’ and ‘#’s about with confidence!

All of this leads me rather nicely on to the fact that we have the July ‘Introduction to Blogging and Social Media’ workshop coming up. This is being held at Parlour in Kensal Green over two consecutive Tuesday evenings, the 7th and 14th July. We still have a few spaces left which we are offering at a 50% off last minute discount. Just quote ‘BlinkDisco’ when you contact us to book. You can see all about the workshop right here.

“Blink” Inspiration: The end of an era…

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015

Don’t panic! This isn’t the announcement of a total end of everything Blink, but it is the end of a part of our business. Sorry for the recent radio silence but we have been in deep and intense meetings about this business of mine and we have come up with some decisions…

Blink London was founded as a reporting service, delivering targeted, swift and informed fashion retail news from London to the fashion industry around the world. The reports were conceived after spending years as a time-poor designer working in an increasingly demanding and speedy industry. I wanted to give designers just like me some brilliantly functional tools to allow them to feel inspired  and informed right from the comfort of their desks. Well, for the last ten years or so we have managed to do that, working closely with our wonderful agents all around the world. However, with the increasing level of free information and inspiration via the world wide web (and blogs just like this one!), teamed with the total global domination of the industry giant that is WGSN (and Stylesight) that we have decided to close the doors on this part of our business.

Oouuff, it’s been a tough decision for me as I don’t like to walk away from anything, but we have fought and struggled and worked our little bums off for long enough and it’s now it’s time to let the curtain fall on that part of Blink London so that we can instead focus all of that creative energy on the remaining parts. One of which is my passion project, this gorgeous blog and all of it’s attending social media activity (which will get more gorgeous, more posts, more love). The second part of Blink is the teaching and lecturing that I do for some of the most respected fashion education establishments as well as the Blink London Blogging and Social Media workshops (of which we are very proud), and I hope to be doing lots and lots more of this.

The third and final part of what we do is perhaps the part that you know least about. That’s because we work as creative consultants to the fashion industry. Perhaps you saw the recent post about our lovely client, Iffley Road? Well, we work with several other brands as their design team as well as dipping in and out of businesses all around the world delivering our view for future seasons, forecasting trends for specific areas of their businesses and helping them to redirect their brands in to exciting pastures new.

If you are looking for deeply skilled creatives to work with you and your fashion or lifestyle brand, then take a look at this and please do drop us a line as we would be delighted to talk to you. Just email me at info@blinklondon.com

“Blink” Events: Our Blogging and Social Media Workshop

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

We’ve just released tickets for the next ‘Introduction to Blogging and Social Media’ via Eventbrite. The workshop is on Tuesday 2nd and Tuesday 9th June, from 6pm until 9pm on both evenings. Have a look here and book quickly as the group is very small and we are always sold out.

I love delivering this workshop for so many reasons. Firstly, it’s a great way to share my passion for the subject. Secondly, I love seeing the fear drop away from our attendees as they see how easy and accessible Blogging and Social Media really is. Third and finally, I love seeing how my groups become an instant support network for each other. It’s a win win win!

We run the workshops from a lovely venue called Parlour in Kensal Green. You can read more about Parlour here, and about the founder and head chef, Jesse Dunford Wood, here!

Take a look at the ‘Learn with us’ page to find out more about our workshops.

Oh and if you need any further persuasion, here’s a lovely testimonial from a recent attendee:

“I recently took the social media course that Blink London course offers and cannot recommend it highly enough. It was exactly what I was looking for – including all the essential information about how to get started, and lots of excellent tricks of the trade. Lucy was friendly and knowledgeable and delivered the content in a clear and light hearted way. I now feel confident to just jump in and get started, thank you Blink London!”

“Blink” Inspiration: Iffley Road’s Icons

Wednesday, May 13th, 2015

You may know me as a fashion blogger, but actually my ‘day job’ is as a fashion designer and creative consultant. One of the brands that I am currently honoured to be working with is the brilliant British runningwear brand, Iffley Road. I am the design element of this business, helping Bill and Claire, Iffley Road’s founders, turn their concepts, thoughts and aesthetic ideals into reality. That reality is a perfectly refined, functional, modern yet somewhat elegant collection of items to make up the perfect running wardrobe.

My first pieces for them have just gone live on the Iffley Road online shop, and will also be on Mr Porter and on the shelves in Barneys New York. Very, very exciting times. I must say that the creative consultancy relationship is a wonderful one when you have clients like Iffley Road. They have a clear vision, a clear call to action when developing new styles, and a very strong aesthetic. They don’t just express that aesthetic through the product, wonderful packaging and great branding. They also express it in very artistic ways, like the current limited edition, anniversary running top featuring artwork by graphic artist Richard Mitchelson, and also like this wonderful animated film.

To celebrate the anniversary of the world’s first sub 4 minute mile ran by Roger Bannister on 6 May 1954, Iffley Road commissioned British animator, Hugo Glover, to create a piece dedicated to some of the Icons of British Running, past and present. It is a lovely thing, whether you are an avid runner or not. Please also take a look at the film “Behind the Icons” to see how the animation was made, showing all of the intense creative work that went in to this film.

“Blink” Events: Fix Up and more!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

Huge apologies that we have been a bit absent on the Blink London blog for the past week. We did leave you with a stunning #MusicMonday from Lionbabe to keep you entertained in the meantime though, as well as lots of pretty Instagram pictures, tweets and FB updates. It’s just been a particularly hectic time here at Blink Towers.

Today’s post is to get you in the loop of what we have been up to as well as giving ourselves a right big pat on the back for all that’s been achieved by the team in a very short amount of time.

Fix Up Look Sharp in aid of CLIC Sargent, cancer charity, supporting childern with cancer, upcycling fashion, sustainable fashion

Fix Up Look Sharp in aid of CLIC Sargent

So first off, last week we spent the day working with CLIC Sargent’s Fix Up Look Sharp team. We first met these guys at the official launch event for this brilliant upcycling fashion venture and were blown away by their commitment, resourcefulness and creativity. We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with them and support their efforts to raise more money for the CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. CLIC Sargent provide much needed clinical, practical, financial and emotional support.

Ruth, the creative driving force behind the Fix Up Look Sharp label

The Fix Up team, most of them voluntary, spent the day with us last week so that we could work with them on how they could further spread the word about their fabulous upcycled, sustainable fashion collection to a wider audience through blogging and social media. I can’t wait to see the results. Guys, I will be checking up on you!

Blink London’s ‘Intro to Blogging and Social Media’ workshop

Actually this proved a great practice run for our ‘Intro to Blogging and Social Media’ workshop that we are running for the first time this year from tonight. We’ll be at Parlour Kensal Green for our sold out session so there has been lots of prep to do to make sure this runs perfectly. You can read more about it here. We still have spaces on our May 5th and 6th session so email us if you’d like to come along.

I’m also giving at talk about social media at the rather fabulous Electric House, so if you are a member please do come along and listen. It’s only an hour so you can all feel empathetic workshop attendees who are with me 7 hours!

On top of all of this we have also been overhauling our reporting service. As the fashion world is becoming more globalised, and there is more and more free information available on the interweb, the fashion industry’s support services, like Blink London, have had to redirect their efforts and find new ways to work with clients.

'Blink Instants', Blink London's brand new monthly publication, fashion forecasting, fashion inspiration, gashion news, British fashion,

‘Blink Instants’, Blink London’s brand new monthly publication

Blink Instants is a brand new approach for us, moving away from simply retail reporting and in to something that is far more unique, exciting and diverse. This has been created with the fashion womenswear market in mind but the diversity of content means that this could be a wonderful tool for any creative industry or service (interior design, product design, visual merchandising teams etc).

We are planning this report will only be available as a soft copy to capitalize on the nimble, swift and ‘instant’ way we work as a small boutique-style service. We are keeping everything crossed as this is a big change for us. As soon as we have more to share with you we will be updating our The Reports page so keep an eye out for that.

So I hope that you’ll forgive us for leaving you hanging, but we will be resuming your usual fabulous service on the blog very, very soon!

“Blink” Inspiration: Fashion Drawing, Tools of the Trade

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

If you keep up with us on here or via our various social media accounts then you’ll know that, as part of our retail reports or within a creative consultancy project, we produce original design work. I love the days when I get to have a pencil in my hand instead of a mouse. Occasionally I share this pleasure across the team, but I must admit that I do tend to keep this job for myself!

As a fashion student I didn’t think I was particularly gifted when it came to doing the various types of fashion drawings (of which there are a few!), but over time I have developed my own style, my approach, my handwriting I guess. As I tell my design students, there is a huge difference between being a fashion designer and a fashion illustrator. Some particularly lucky folks may well be both but if you aren’t so blessed then it’s all about finding your own way to express your ideas.

Blink London's 'tools of the trade' for fashion drawing

Blink London’s ‘tools of the trade’ for fashion drawing

I thought you might like to see my tools of the trade for the fashion flats that I produce (quite literally an interpretation of a design if was, well, laid flat). I am obsessive about the pens and pencils that I use and my selection has evolved over many years of trial and error.

Blink London's 'tools of the trade' for fashion drawing

Blink London’s ‘tools of the trade’ for fashion drawing

The pencil should be HB, but more importantly it is sharpened with a scalpel so that I can create difference edges and effects with it. Next comes the fine-line pen, and this is always a Muji 0.38 rollerball. Actually this is the pen I use for everything, everyday. I must have a kajillion of them! After that I use a Letraset Promarker in Ice Grey 1 for shadowing, folds and softness. Then the whole thing is outlined in a Pentel ‘Sign’ pen which is fibre tipped and gives a dense, clean line. Oh, last but not least is the Pentel Micro Correct which is a brilliantly precise Tippex style white-out product to clean up any wobbles, marks or mistakes.

So there you have it, an insight into my pencil case, which is Isabel Marant of course… Perhaps I’ll share another insight with you soon about my obsession for a specific type of paper to draw on. Oh the excitement!
