Valentino’s snake circlets and our hair adornment obsession

Thursday, February 4th, 2016

Here’s our second indulgence in some Blink Towers team high-fiving. Hope you didn’t mind yesterday’s too much. So let me take you back to our fixation  on hair adornment. We looked at minimalist hardware vs sparkle explosions. We also featured some fashion fabulous tiaras and flowers. Well look at what cropped up in the Valentino Couture collection. Yes, it’s another post of adoration to the brilliance that is Valentino, and this time focussing on the snakey circlets slithering around their models’ heads.

As with our post featuring the Chanel Couture show eyeliner, this isn’t necessarily something to pop on to complete your look on a daily basis, but on the other hand maybe it is just the added fashion excitement that your weekly big shop needs?

Radley supports British Heart Foundation with the limited edition ‘Sweetheart’ range

Radley have launched their ‘Sweetheart’ collection, a limited edition cross body bag and matching coin purse in perfect time for both National Heart Month (February) and of course Valentine’s Day! All profits from the sale of these two styles will be donated to BHF by Radley, so you can proudly wear your heart not quite on your sleeve, but you know what I mean.

There are over 7 million people in the UK currently living with heart and circulatory disease, and I’m one of them so obviously I think this is fabulous for oh so many reasons!

Natalie Bolton, Design Director at Radley comments “We are delighted to be partnering with the British Heart Foundation, designing these fun limited edition products that will raise funds to support its essential ongoing research in the fight against heart disease.”

James Hails, Head of Corporate Partnerships at the BHF, adds: “We’re delighted to be working with Radley again for 2016. As a charity we are reliant on the support of organisations like Radley to help us raise essential funds to continue our vital research. The designs are fantastic and we hope people will wear them with pride knowing they are helping millions of people.”

Mary Benson, SS’16 collection from LFW

Mary Benson is another fabulous new name that we spotted at London Fashion Week, and we managed to catch up with the team in person at the British Fashion Council’s London Show Rooms in Paris during Paris Fashion Week. It’s an intriguing womenswear collection founded by Mary, and now created by her and new her design partner, Morten Ussing.

I met the pair in their showroom space, drawn in by the stunningly dramatic white dress set next to a rail full of their collection. On my first view of the dress I was thinking romance, girlish abandon, vintage elegance with an 80’s twist. Then I met Mary and Morten and they set me straight…

The pair explained that this collection is a reflection each experiencing some pretty tough heartbreak and all of the mixed up feelings that accompany it. Fresh from a break up myself I was really very much in the mood to appreciate where this innovative design duo were coming from. Some pieces in the collection are just detailed with hearts and flowers, but these swiftly become tear-filled eyes, which in turn are joined by lines of handwriting. The scrawled words start out looking sweetly beseeching but quickly loose control and end up rather crazed and a bit sweary. This is literally wearing your heart on your sleeve, along with your private journal shared right across your back.

It is utterly modern, clever, and artistic in a kinda Tracey Emin way. The collection manages to express a certain ownership of those feelings and in turn reveals a level of empowerment. The silhouettes have a kind of Biba-esque simplicity about them, allowing the surface pattern to sing out, whilst abstractly dipping in and out across areas of volume.

This is a label you are sure to hear more of. This may be their first taste of being part of the London Fashion Week establishment (last year Benson showed as part of Fashion East), but they are already well supported. For this collection they collaborated with Stephen Jones for the hats (how gorgeous is that red heart!), and with Tatty Devine on this utterly genius tear-adorned eyewear, modelled by Mary herself.

Thanks so much to Mary and Morten for the time that they gave me in Paris. I hope that it was a huge success. Oh and can I borrow that really sweary number to hang out outside my exes place this weekend please?

“Blink” Accessories: Marvellous milliner, Piers Atkinson

Thursday, October 8th, 2015

As we mentioned a few posts back, when we were in Paris for Paris Fashion Week our first stop was to pop by the British Fashion Council’s ‘London Show Rooms’ to offer our support to the British designers showing there. We’ll be sharing with you a few designer profiles from the event, starting with the rather fabulous Piers Atkinson, who we first featured in 2013.

Without having to ask twice Piers donned one of his creations (although we were hoping he’d go for one of the ‘My Little Pony’ inspired ponytailed numbers!) and posed for us along with part of his SS’16 collection. His ultra creative work sits perfectly with the whimsical, creative and innovative millinery tradition we Brits are world renowned for. Aside from the wondrous creativity, Atkinson’s work is also utterly beautifully made, whether more sophisticated or hilariously cute. Hello cat hats!

I was encourage to pop on a chapeau too while I was there, and although the obvious choice for me might well have been one of these super-cute cat inspired designs, I actually pushed the boat out and popped on this bandana/bunny ear headband style complete with a sparkly net veil. His work has been worn by Anna Dello Russo, Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Rihanna- and now Blink London!

I could easily have carried on the rest of my day in this. When I was a fashion student I was never knowingly under-accessorised and that often meant wearing a hat, whether heading to a lecture, a night out or the local supermarket. How did I get out of that habit? Time to revive it I think, but perhaps only ever with something from Piers Atkinson’s collections…

Thanks to Piers and his team for giving me some of their precious time. I hope that Paris was a huge success for you.

“Blink” Accessories: Mawi’s AW’15 statement pieces

Friday, September 11th, 2015

And when we say ‘statement pieces’ we mean it in the most direct way possible! When we saw East London label, Mawi‘s AW’15 collection at February’s London Fashion Week, their new knits and structured bags were causing quite a commotion.

Fast forward a little and Madonna was shot with the ‘Dealer’ bag in her sticky mits. That’s when it was clear that Mawi were on to a good thing. Unsurprisingly some of the styles have completely sold out, but some of the other variations on this theme could still be yours. You just need to decide if you’re a Dealer or a Thief…

“Blink” Accessories: Flower Power at Wilderness

Friday, August 14th, 2015

In yesterday’s post we gave you the heads up on what to expect as far as our Wilderness festival style coverage was concerned. After all of that wonderfully spangly makeup, the next key element to share is the amazing variety of flower crowns. I guess these pretty fellas have been a feature of the core festi look only for the past couple of years, but in that short time the flower crown has been established as a pretty much a ‘must have’ part of the festival look. Well, you pop one of these beauties on and it’s an instant game changer from your everyday self in to festi-fabulous mode. I’d quite like to see a few more of these just randomly on folks around town. Now that would cheer everyone’s day up no end!

So to define the variations on this theme spotted at Wilderness, we’d say you had your:

  • folksy, free-range feeling naturals
  • full-on mega bouquet naturals
  • printed paper floral crowns (DIY at a lovely stall)
  • artificial, bold and bright floral crowns, clips and headbands.

Those huge and stunning floral arrangements below were being worn by the Pukka tea folks who were very gorgeously handing out cuppas to those in need.

Which floral look is your favourite? Oh and special kudos to those fellas rocking flowers too.

“Blink” Travels: Flying- travel in style

Friday, July 31st, 2015

Since the beginning of the year I seem to have been on a pretty regular round of packing and unpacking suitcases, double checking I have my passport and triple checking all of my flight details. It’s been a wonderful time of travelling for clients, on research trips, on mini adventures and to spend time with far flung family. The next trip is all about spending 2 weeks doing as little as possible as I head away for my Summer hols. To make sure I have the speediest journey from home to sun lounger (with cocktail in hand), I have decided to opt for a hand luggage only flight.

With a bit of careful planning this doesn’t mean you have to scrimp on any of your luxuries or outfit changes, although to be honest I plan to pretty much be living in my bikini. A big tip from me is to choose tried and tested favourites from your Summer wardrobe, work with a pretty tight colour palette and then add in some bold accessories to help you make a small selection seem like a full Kim K’s closet of choices.

First you have to get your travel outfit right. I like to choose something that will get some wear through my hols too. I pretty much always choose jeans. Stretch Jamies from Topshop are a fav and really comfortable even for long haul.  This time I’ll be wearing those jeans with a kinda Chloe inspired swingy top from H&M. That way I start to get my holiday vibe going, and it also saves it from getting creased in my carry-on! My go-to handbag is this small but beautifully detailed fringed clutch from Oasis. It’s big enough for my wallet and all important documents but small enough to make sure I can see everything in it at a glance (I’m a bit of a checker).

If the airline is getting sniffy about one bag only per passenger I know that I can easily stuff this weeny handbag inside my carry-on suitcase. Actually as an aside, I would always suggest you quadruple check what number and size of bags your airline allows so you don’t get caught out. I found this table from Purple Parking really helpful as a good reference for that very thing.

My Summer'15 favourite sandals, fashion blog, Blink London, wedge sandals

My Summer’15 favourite sandals

Next is the shoes. I am in love with these nutty metallic gold wedge numbers. Perhaps you saw my video of them on Instagram? Well, wearing them not only makes my outfit more fabulous, it also frees up a ton of space in my suitcase. You see, not just a pretty face!

My 'carry on' beauty must haves!

My ‘carry on’ beauty must haves!

And talking of a pretty face, when working just with carry-on luggage and the volume restrictions you have to be extra smart. I use my Heidi Klein pouch as the clear bag required for liquids, and then when I’m away it reverts to its intended purpose as being a wet bikini bag. Having this pre-packed means no fuss for the security check. Any of my holiday favourites that come in small enough bottles get to come with, and then once you’re through security you can stock up on anything bigger in duty free.

I always fly makeup free with a generous slathering of moisturiser. Once safely in the air, I give my skin a freshen up with a Simple Micellar cleansing wipe and then pop on some Rodial Dragon’s Blood face mask (it doesn’t show so nobody need know!). You’re about to inflict lots of sunshine, seawater and aircon on your skin so my number one piece of advice is to ensure you’re maxed out on moisturisation from start to finish of your trip. I them swoosh on a bit of bronzer, mascara and a dash of lippy just before landing (no need to frighten the locals).

So there you have it, my plan to a happy and stylish holiday, even when travelling light. Roll on my departure date! For more of our posts about our travels, take a look here.

“Blink” Inspiration: Giambattista Valli, AW’15 Couture Collection

Friday, July 10th, 2015

We have discovered a new level of fashion joy. Have you seen the Giambattista Valli couture collection? It is beyond luxurious. I think that between Valli and Dior, the whole lexicon of luxury fashion is being redefined. Fendi and Lagerfeld can bugger off into the history books with their all fur disgrace along with the old fashioned ideas of luxe that fur represents. Giambattista Valli reminds us with this collection that true luxury, and true couture is all about the craft, skill and diversity created by those legion of ultra talented ‘petit mains’ teamed with a geniusly innovative designer.

Building on those vast skirted looks from the AW’14 couture collection Valli again plays with acres of airy tulle in sweeping skirts, but this time in tandem with puff ball style surges of volume at empire line or hip. There is a strong feeling of 60’s cocktail hour with fancy pants layered over with matching tunic or coats, enhanced with the high contrast monochromes of flashes of acid trip brights. The 60’s vibe is reaffirmed with those huge rounded shades, studded with massive, square-cut crystals. Oh, and what about those vast earings? Giambattista, we are utterly in love!
