Blink London 2015 prediction: structured white

We also feel strongly for white in a dense, solid, calm, defined, repetitive, constructed way across every aesthetic area of our lives, our surroundings, our clothes, our makeup and our belongings. We especially like this approach to white for Autumn Winter.

“Blink” Events: House of Hackney SS’15 at The Communications Store’s SS’15 Press Day

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

The first time that I walked into the House of Hackney shop, I nearly fainted from an overwhelming sense of joy. Okay, that may be a slight overstatement but there was definitely a minute where I couldn’t catch my breath (you can read more about that first visit here). If you haven’t been in then get yourself to Shoreditch High Street and prepare yourself for a highly patterned, highly fabulous retail experience.

The shot here is of a mini version of the House of Hackney experience via The Communications Store‘s press day. The SS’15 collection was displayed along with a couple of their interiors pieces, just to help set the scene.

The new collection features some brilliant new print designs shown as standalone statements as well as in some wonderful combinations. From skins to florals and botanical inspired leaves, the scale and colourways are as bold and vivid as we have come to expect and love from this genius British brand.

To top it all off, and to pull the whole mood together were these stunningly 70’s platforms. Get buckled up on to my feet now you beauties.

“Blink” Events: Markus Lupfer at The Communications Store’s SS’15 Press Day

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Markus Lupfer‘s collections of spangled knitwear always brings a smile to our face. In fact he is responsible for my favourite knitted look from this Autumn (you can see it here). For SS’15, in addition to those signature styles, the collection has gorgeously grown and diversified. Just check out this amazing rainbow of SS’15 styles that we shot at The Communications Store press day.

As well as all of the woven styles, extending on from the AW’14 additions to the collection including some super cute dresses, we have also fallen head over heels for these bonkers shoes. Its kinda Miu Miu on a particularly psychedelic day.

“Blink” Retail: Heidi Klein Pre-Resort

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

When you live the rather fabulous life that Heidi Klein caters for, you not only need a ‘Resort’ collection for those Winter sun escapes, but you also need a ‘pre-Resort’ collection for your pre-holiday holiday. With swimwear and chic beach dressing like this, why wouldn’t you take every opportunity to show it off? Here are some of our favourite looks from this offer that dropped on the 15th October.

This first look is named ‘Bimini’ after the island in the Bahamas. Clean lines and linear shapes look understatedly fabulous in minky neutral and black.

If you love a more classic French Riviera style look, then take a look at the lovely Corelli collection, blending a fine navy and white stripe on a textural base, detailed with a rope style trim. The team have created this super soft, slub jersey tee shirt dress style cover up, which I think is possibly one of the most flexible styles in their collection.

“Blink” New Designers: Lily Kamper

Friday, October 17th, 2014

Although Lily Kamper only graduated from the RCA in 2012, she has already established a brand with a confidently embedded aesthetic. This jewellery label is understatedly luxurious, blending transparent and coloured resins and crystal with metal to create symbolic feeling geometric shapes. The crisply sculpted character of her signature pendants seem both utterly modern and equally somehow ancient. For us we think the best description may be ‘a hybrid of rave culture meets new age crystal healer via ancient Egyptian monoliths’. Yeah, you know that old chestnut! Oh, and we LOVE Lily’s nail art too.

As our rather diverse description suggests, Kamper’s work is unique and innovative. We at Blink London are confirmed fans. For the SS’15 collection that we saw at London Fashion Week, she has added in some new elements like this earcuff, showing us how her aesthetic translates brilliantly into finer, smaller pieces.

“Blink” New Designers: Tengri

Wednesday, October 8th, 2014

With all new fashion ventures, success or failure is first and foremost rooted in your product. In supporting roles are your approach, your story and your ethics. In my opinion, many sustainable brands focus too much on their ethics and not enough on delivering fashion relevant, want-able, gorgeous product.

Nancy Johnston, founder of Tengri, seems to have the balance just right with her collection of  100% natural, undyed, hand-combed Mongolian yak wool knitwear that is eco-friendly and sustainable, as soft as cashmere and warmer than merino wool. I think it looks really gorgeous and I can’t wait to get my hands on some, especially in the wake of last Autumn Winter’s horrific angora scandal (you can read more about that here and here). Animal fibres are a tough ethical call in many ways. Even the humble woolly sheep often doesn’t get given the care it deserves at home or abroad.

It seems that the small scale, socially engaged, empowerment oriented Tengri offers us a very clear, open and utterly spotless source to production picture that supports all involved from start (the Mongolian yak herders) to the finish (the UK production is manned by retired industry professionals). It’s a beautiful approach and we’re delighted to share this really great fashion story with you.

“Blink” Retail: H&M x Alexander Wang

Monday, October 6th, 2014

On November 6th H&M will launch their latest designer collaboration. Alexander Wang x H&M Collection will hit around 250 stores worldwide and online. Be ready boys and girls.

“I am honoured to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle,” Alexander Wang said.

With menswear and womenswear, this collection features original designs created by Wang specifically for H&M. There is plenty of his signature sporty style, and in fact much of the collection is actual performance wear which is exciting for all of us conscious gym bunnies! There’s also lots and lots of branding with the Wang name plastered all over the collection is quite a 90’s kinda feel. From what I’ve seen, I think this will be a really exciting and quite authentic feeling collaboration, but I don’t think I’ll be elbowing anyone out of the way for the swimming goggles…

“Alexander Wang is one of the most important voices in fashion today. He understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious. It feels incredible to be collaborating with him this year,” said Margareta van den Bosch, H&M’s creative advisor.

Oh, and the ad campaign is pretty darn gorgeous too, featuring some big name girls (including the ever gorgeous Joan Smalls and Natasha Poly) as well as some actual athletes (soccer player Andy Carroll and kickboxer Rivaldino dos Santos).

“Blink” Retail: Are you sure Chanel?

Friday, October 3rd, 2014

I may be about to commit fashion suicide and send myself forever to persona-non-grata-ville. Well, frankly I don’t give a damn, to paraphrase Rhett Butler. I just think it’s time someone spoke up about this crime against reason that is taking place under the glaring spotlight of the fashion world’s adoration.

Let me make things clearer about what has gotten my goat quite so severely. Look at this holey, icky pink crop top and leggings combo. Forget the caption. Do you genuinely think that is a good look? Classy? Innovative? Saying something new? Deserving of a very, very, very large price tag? Be honest now!

Chanel AW'14

Chanel AW’14

I think it’s just awful, and I would think it was awful even if it was £4.99 hanging on a wonky rail in Camden Market (where it would probably look quite at home). And what about these? Day-glo plush and big chains and padlocks and lumpy trims and fabric that looks like it could be from a really ugly sofa and be labelled ‘draylon’. That’s just my opinion about these looks from the AW’14 Chanel collection, but if you have eyes I don’t really see how you can disagree.

Chanel AW'14

Chanel AW’14

Just to back up the point I am rather circuitously making, these are some looks from the Chanel SS’15 show that just happened Paris. As usual, the fashion world appears to be doing backflips of joy, combusting with excitement at how amazing this collection is and feting it’s creator, the forever monochrome Kaiser Karl.

Chanel SS'15 (images from style.com with thanks)

Chanel SS’15 (images from style.com with thanks)

These are just a few looks selected pretty randomly from this show. Can you honestly say that this is beautiful? Does this really sit with the tradition and heritage of Chanel? I get ‘Ugly’ Fashion, really I do, but this is something else. This is ugly in a whole new way. Like just really rotten ugly.

I actually think that Karl Lagerfeld may be pulling fashion’s leg, just seeing how awful he can make the collections look and still get away with it. It’s an elaborate prank, a joke, a ruse. What else could this possibly be? And the fashion world’s taste-makers have all fallen for it. I think Karl must go home every evening and stifle the noise of his hysterical laughter by stuffing his mush into Choupette’s furry tum.

Okay, I have said it. I’m out and proud! Who’s with me? Or am I really all alone in fashion Coventry? Ooh, it’s gone awfully quite round here…

“Blink” Retail: Victoria Beckham opens on Dover Street

Wednesday, October 1st, 2014

The hoardings have been up on 36 Dover Street for some time and we’ve been wondering what the first Victoria Beckham store that was being created behind them will look like. Well, now we know. Just as the label has proven to be a wonderful surprise of chic upon chic, so the very first Victoria Beckham store is too.

The multi-award-winning London-based architect Farshid Moussavi has designed a space that is in equal parts elegant and also innovative. With miles of polished concrete, the latticed ceiling, high shine stainless steel panels and sharply cut diagonal lines this is an imposingly graphic interior.

Beckham herself selected the pieces of the collection for the stores launch, some of which are unique to Dover Street. Here you’ll also see the first small leather goods collection, crafted from ultra soft calf leather.

Huge congratulations to Beckham and her team. This is a world-class addition to London’s fashion retail experience. Perhaps next she’ll decide to show in London Fashion Week too? We can only hope.

“Blink” Retail: Queen Kamali gets even more Active

Friday, September 12th, 2014

If you read my post about Surviving LFW by escaping to The Savoy for some calm, quiet time, you will have spotted that when advising you to try The Savoy’s pool I suggested donning a Norma Kamali swimsuit for the occasion. Well, I figured that 1) you’re a fashion conscious individual, 2) you are rather sophisticated and 3) that you appreciate timeless yet brilliant design if you’re someone who would appreciate the joys that The Savoy has to offer.

I design a couple of swimwear collections as part of our consultancy service, and I have to say that through my years of researching the best of the best in swimwear, Kamali is pretty much Queen. She has built a decades long career around doing marvellously innovative things with jersey. In a wonderfully fatalistic fashion moment, the same day that I posted about wearing Norma Kamali to complete your restorative lengths in style, I also came across a whole new and exciting collection of Kamali styles in Selfridges. I think this must be a recent addition as I haven’t noticed it before.

If you train, or if just like to look like you train, then this is the collection for you. Reminding me of Hot Gossip meets High Disco this collection features graphically go faster style ‘spliced’ inserts, either in mesh, high sheen or bright metallic silver and I want it ALL!!!!

And who but Norma Kamali could get away with having a maxi dress in an active collection?

Pure perfection. Do take a look in Selfridges or at Kamali’s online shop as there’s lots more to this offer including some fabulous swimwear for you to wear during your trip to The Savoy!
