“Blink” Retail: Fur(k) Off

Monday, June 8th, 2015

Today’s issue of the Business of Fashion just dropped into my inbox and this is it’s lead story…

It’s a well researched and fact filled article about whether Fur has a place in Fashion (just click on that link to read the full article). If you are a long standing Blink reader, then you’ll know our uncompromising view on this subject and it’s a firm absolutely no thanks to fur from us. No fur, no thanks, on no occasion. Seriously that left hand image just sums the whole argument up for me. How could you possibly wear real fur (yes, that includes you Canada Gooseys and your coyote trimmed hoods, all of you with those rotten fur poms on your hats or handbags, and you wearing that vintage fur coat) if you have any conscience at all? It is simply unacceptable on every level.

Yes you may eat meat (I don’t by the way), but I bet you like to ensure your meat, eggs, fish, milk has come from a happy animal that experienced some quality of like during it’s short time on this earth. Well, most (but not all by any stretch) of the leather and sheepskin that we wear comes from animals that have been farmed for more than just their skins but have also been part of our food chain. Well, that is never ever ever the case with animals who are farmed or trapped purely for their pelts. It’s a miserable existence and often a shockingly disgusting death.

So, we thank the wonderful British Vogue, Selfridges, Liberty, Arcadia group et al for turning their backs on this material choice- and are they any less fabulous for doing so? Nope, we think it makes then super, extra, totally and additionally fabulous actually.

“Blink” Retail: Arcadia’s AW’14 Press Day- Accessories

Thursday, May 15th, 2014

Some more for you from the Arcadia AW’14 press event. This post is all about some rather lovely jewels, heels, bags and boots that were a particular highlight for me.

Starting things off are these very stylish jewels and stunning extra long, green suede boots from Dorothy Perkins. These were an extra surprise because I generally skip past this label- but I was quite literally stopped in my tracks by the really fabulous selection of accessories. I’ll be making a rare visit to good old DP’s come Autumn to see what will actually make it home with me.

Next comes Freedom at Topshop. Never knowingly understated, this is THE label to hit for statement pieces that are always super hot and brilliantly blingy. This little number looks like wearing it might replace a heavy lifting session at the gym! I love the smokey shade of the gems, adding a touch of sophistication to an otherwise extra OTT number.

Topshop‘s shoes and bags are some of the best on the high street. Reflecting all the hottest Autumn directions and covering all occasions in a really creative and innovative way, the shoes on show at the press day were really exciting. As were the bags. We’re still good to be rocking backpacks come Autumn. Yay!

Finally, we have Miss Selfridge. When they get it right, they really, really get it right, and this is generally it’s embellished, beaded and embroidered womenswear but also with some surprisingly good accessories. I really loved the styling of this blue gemmed style, sitting really beautifully on this blue/grey, high sheen print and pale lilac faux fur. It’s like an Autumn mood board all by itself.

“Blink” Retail: Arcadia’s AW’14 Press Day- W Collection by Wallis

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014

The Arcadia press day is always a treat. It’s an amazing chance to get an insight into what the UK high street’s biggest fashion brands are saying for the season ahead. One that is always a pleasant surprise is the W Collection by Wallis.

I really rarely cross the threshold of a Wallis store. It’s not intended for me so that’s just fine. Perhaps this is why I always feel that the W Collection is a bit of a well kept secret. If you’re into flattering, innovative and well designed clothes with a rather chic edge, then this is the label for you to shop. It is grown up, but still with a sexy edge and enough reference to key fashion trends for it to feel thoroughly relevant. Here are my AW’14 favourites from the press event.

“Blink” Retail: SS’14 Press Days- Topshop

Thursday, November 14th, 2013

I hope that you enjoyed our little look at Wallis’ W collection yesterday. Now we take a look at our favourtes from Topshop. This was a couple of rails that were virtually vibrating with energy as bold pattern, embellishment, bright colour upon colour and lots of shine were hung up side by side by side. It was as overwhelming as it was exciting.

Even though bright shades were the strongest statement, my favourite item and one that’s on my Spring shopping list (I hope it makes it to the shop floor!) is this stunning peachy pink, trench style coat. Perfect proportions, luxe feeling fabric and cool detailing. And brilliant when styled with the fuzzy pastel pink pencil skirt hung next to it.

Sports inspired looks are still very topical, and this wasn’t the only sweat that we saw across the press days but it was the prettiest and also the blingiest. Love the clean, slickly sporty finish of the backpack and this clutch bag. Oh, and those go faster striped, sporty wedges are quite fantastic too.

I really like the matching tops and bottoms sets. Cut in graphically simplistic shapes from firm fabrics at Toppers, ensuring that the focus is on the stunning patterns. We saw these from several labels, but these were amongst the boldest.

Finally, to add to the riot of super bright colour and eye popping shine, Toppers were also showing a collection of gorgeously bold, bright and brilliant jewellery. Statement necklaces have rarely before made quite such a, well, statement!

“Blink” Retail: SS’14 Press Days: Wallis

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

This time last week we were in the midst of a flurry of Press day activity. It’s great to gain a deeper insight, not only into the season ahead, but also into the way each brand wants to present themselves and express their personality. At a multi-brand presentation like the Arcadia one, this is especially interesting. I hit the event expecting just to be excited by Toppers (more of that to come), and to see what Miss S were saying(more of that to come too), but in fact the brand that made the biggest impression was Wallis who were showing their W collection.

It was a small but perfectly formed selection spread across two rails, expressing just a couple of trend stories in a clear and precise way. I am not their target audience, but that doesn’t stop me from appreciating that they have created something really quite special for their particular customer. Chic, refined, fashion relevant and beautifully designed. Here’s some of my favourites from this collection…
