‘I was rich and famous but I was never free’

Teatum Jones always have a multi-layered story behind their collections, and there is usually something very dark at the heart of that story. When looking at their work just on the surface what we all see is an incredibly beautiful, expressive and innovative approach to womenswear. Scratch that surface just a little and you can start to reveal some of the twisted tales that inspire these sophisticated clothes.

For SS’15 Teatum Jones were inspired by the intricacies of Nina Simone’s life story. From the soundtrack, enhanced by a euphoric and moving gospel choir, to the hand embellished panels that reference the Methodist ministers of Simone’s childhood, to the seemingly abstract linear layout of panelling and embroidery detailing which actually references the visions Simone had of her husband’s organs outside of his body…

As always, Catherine and Rob have taken an intensive approach to realising their concept, rooted in their passion for exceptionally beautiful textiles- all of which have been specifically developed for this collection. Their signature use of jacquards has been enhanced with the application of bold perspex elements. The precious and delicate is offset and contrasted with hardy drills and twills and the unfinished yet considered use of raw edges.

Shapes are in places sculptural, and in others, close to the body, combining dense coverage as well as sheer sections and the beauty of surprisingly revealed skin.

“Blink” London Fashion Week: Teatum Jones, SS’14 collection

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

If you’re a “Blink” regular, then you’ll already know about our love affair with Teatum Jones. We came across this label several seasons ago, at their first LFW appearance, and we fell for Catherine and Rob, their aesthetic and the intense stories inspiring each collection. Known for their couture level finishing, wonderful prints and softly sculptural silhouettes, Teatum Jones are a brand that combines reality with pure, brilliant creativity. This season was their first on the official LFW schedule too, so additional congratulations for that!

This collection was titled ‘Jacquie and Mary Ellen’. Those are the names of Rob and Catherine’s mums, and they provided the starting point for their research journey for this season. The looks are not so much about them in a literal sense, but more so about the inspiration to be found in the domestic interactions with all of our mothers when we were children.

In the collection you can see shapes inspired by a tea towel being slung across a shoulder and the straps of an apron. Textiles have been laminated to give them, not only a firm structure, but also to reflect utilitarian, wipe clean surfaces. Patterns are inspired by table cloth checks and the idealized bright florals found on kitchen linen- but in true Teatum Jones style, there are images of their own mother’s hands cleverly incorporated into the flowers. This collection takes a theme close to many of our hearts, and drives it forward into an abstracted, sophisticated mood. There are signature Teatum Jones shapes (the biker looks wonderful in punctured white leather) reworked for the new season, as well as some exquisite new silhouettes to be enticed by.

“Blink” London Fashion Week: Teatum Jones, AW’13

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

If you have been following this blog for a little while, you may well have picked up on the fact that there are a few brands that we have fallen deeply in love with, and Teatum Jones is certainly one of them. For the past few season’s I have had the privileged to be invited to preview the duo’s collections and attend their shows, launches and events. It’s always such a treat. I have rarely come across a label who embrace the research stage with such brio, such passion and such creativity. It’s wonderful to hear Catherine Teatum and Rob Jones excitedly explain where the inspiration for each collection started, how the journey unfolded for them and how all of the elements perfectly fit together in their wonderfully creative vision.

This season Teatum Jones started by becoming fascinated with ‘Lolita’, the classic novel by Nabakov filled with twisted associations and deep, dark tensions. They then moved on to discovering more about the author, discovering his poetry, his life as a scholar, his relationship with his wife and that he was also a noted lepidopterist- that’s butterfly collector to you and me. The story behind this collection embraces the transience of youth, fragility and innocence, captured artfully in the combined textures, tender fluidity versus firm form, gloriously painterly pattern contrasted with graphic polka dots, subtle androgyny and almost ‘uniform’ feeling clean lines.

Delightfully, this collection reworks some styles that have become the Teatum Jones classics (the Biker and the shirt dress) as well as introducing some stunning new silhouettes. Their focus on craftmanship, textiles and a unique print handwriting makes this collection one full of subtle surprises and moments of pure fashion joy.

“Blink” London Fashion Week: Teatum Jones, SS’13

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

The presentation of the Teatum Jones collection was just gorgeous. It was the perfect set to express both their concept and the incredibly beautiful pieces, designed by Teatum and Teatum architects and embracing much of Teatum Jones inspiration. The Orchid Suite at The Dorchester was transformed by the addition of the up-lit floor and the high shine block style columns, which managed to actually enhance the rooms delicate and refined interior.

If you read our preview post about Rob and Catherine’s inspiration, you will probably be intrigued to know how it was translated into a Spring Summer ’13 fashion direction. Well, let me tell you that this collection is complex, clever, impactful and wearable. Teatum Jones’ handwriting is all about taking extreme inspiration and tempering it with couture level care, wonderful textile combinations and an intense attention to detail. The show pieces incorporated amazingly sculptural concertina style pleating. Linear inserts and paneling add further sharpness to many of the silhouettes. All of the styles deserve to be appreciated 360 degrees as ever angle is a joy to behold, especially with the addition of sheer cape style sections. The metallics shimmered and changed shades. The jacquard embraced it’s vintage inspiration while feeling incredibly current. The combination of the prints drew together the pinks and greeny blues of the colour palette.

“Blink” London Fashion Week: Teatum Jones, SS’13

Monday, September 17th, 2012

As you read this I am sitting in the stunning Orchid Suite at The Dorchester, looking at a set created by Teatum and Teatum specifically for the SS’13 catwalk show of Teatum Jones. If you a regular reader of the “Blink” blog, you’ll know that I am a huge fan of this design duo, and I am delighted to see them going from strength to strength, season on season.

Rob and Catherine invited me to see a preview of the collection, pick their brains on the inspiration behind it and have a close look at some of the pieces. I can honestly say that they always floor me with the in depth thought process and the journey that they take each season with their inspiration. This collection is titled ‘From Democracy with Love’. As you can see from the shot of their mood board, this is a complex and multi-layered story incorporating elements from the ground breaking science fiction films ‘Solaris’ and ‘2001 Space Odyssey’ along with the story of the ‘Space Race’ and all of the political intrigue and technical developments that it involved, encompassing various political leaders including Churchill, Stalin, Nixon, Reagan and JFK. Along with JFK comes a strong influence from Jackie Kennedy’s first lady style. Teatum Jones were fascinated with looking at democracy and the fact that who’s caste in the role of good or bad is all down to your perspective. Layer this with a late 50’s, early 60’s mood, the flesh filled art of Jenny Saville and the metallic texture of John Chamberlain‘s sculpture and you have a fantastically unique story as the basis of this collection.

Those elements have been superbly blended in to a geometric detailed, bespoke jacquard from Italy, stunning two tone metallics, a somewhat sporty element to some of the detailing and a toile de joie inspired print featuring Churchill and Yuri Gagarin. All of this is brilliantly translated into an utterly chic, sophisticated and considered collection that develops the couture like handwriting of Teatum Jones a step further.

Congratulations to Rob and Catherine, and wishing you a hugely successful season.

“Blink” Competition: Teatum Jones Illustration Competition, the Results!

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Yesterday I was honoured to be one of the judges for the Teatum Jones competition to find a illustration to use on the menu for their Dorchester Fashion Tea AW’12 collection presentation in September. Have a look here at the post we wrote about the launch of the competition back in July.

Teatum Jones were inundated with really creative and diverse work from budding illustrators from around the globe. The standards were high, and I knew the other judges and I would have a really tough times choosing between all the great submissions. Our first task was to edit the selection down to our top five, and from there choose a winner. After much hot debate, we settled on a winner, and I’m delighted to say it was one of my favourites.

We hope you agree that Evelina’s work really captures the mood and feel of Teatum Jones’ AW’12 collection. What stunning work, which will be featured on the menu for the Fashion Tea at The Dorchester on 18th September, and Evelina has also won a table for two for the event so she’ll be able to see the collection presented in the beautiful setting of The Promenade. The other four finalists will have their work printed on to canvases which will be shown in the Dorchester. I’m really looking forward to seeing them printed in large scale. I’m sure they’ll look amazing.

Congratulations to the winner, and all of the finalists.

“Blink” Events: Teatum Jones and The Dorchester

Monday, June 25th, 2012

I was invited to join the lovely Catherine Teatum and Rob Jones for tea and a very exciting update last week. Its so fantastic to see this duo progress from strength to strength. After the huge success of being picked up by Liberty from Spring ’12, Teatum Jones‘ collection has also been bought by an exciting new concept store in Vancouver called ‘Secret Location‘, amongst several other high profile global retail locations.

They are also one of the recipients of this year’s CFE Pioneer award; an incredibly prestigious mentoring programme connecting them with top name industry experts from all aspects of the fashion industry.

If that wasn’t enough, Teatum Jones are also collaborating with The Dorchester to create an exclusive silk scarf. This scarf, printed in a design created by Teatum Jones to reflect the rich and glamorous history of The Dorchester, will be exclusive to The Dorchester hotels globally and to Liberty London.

The Dorchester chose Teatum Jones as they felt the there was wonderful synergy with their focus on authenticity, craftsmenship, a passion for detail and a reflection of tradition but with a very modern edge. The hotel opened up their archive of images, letters and receipts to the design duo for inspiration,  as well as showing Rob and Catherine all around front and back of house of this wonderful Deco detailed building.

In additon to the scarf, The Dorchester will also play host to Teatum Jones SS’13 show during London Fashion Week, and the day after the LFW show, they will also be presenting the AW’12 collection to the public in a salon style show in an event called a ‘Fashion Tea’. We’ll keep you updated on when tickets are available.

“Blink” London Fashion Week: Teatum Jones AW’12

Monday, February 20th, 2012

You may be forgiven for thinking we might be on the payroll, but the absolute honest truth is that we’re just passionate about Teatum Jones. I hope that you enjoyed our teaser post last week? Well, now you can see the full beauty of the collection, and we hope to have the video for you very soon.

Liberty hosted the Teatum Jones AW’12 collection presentation in their stunning Heritage Suite. Rob and Catherine set about creating a mini room set in one corner where three models elegantly wore some of the signature pieces from this collection. Other pieces were presented on mannequins, so that you could have a really close look at all of the wonderful detailing without feeling too shy about poking around. Teatum Jones have built on their print and detail driven aesthetic that delivers a new level of elegant modernity. Pockets within pockets, high contrast stitch detailing, bold proportions and late 50’s couture feeling construction all worked perfectly together to create a mood that was somewhat familiar, but also quite disquieting.

Building further on this incredible attention to detail, Teatum Jones also worked with a paper engineer to create a look book that can only be described as a work of art. This pop-up book was inspired by folkloric ideals and Grimm’s fairytales central to this collection.
