Valentino Resort 2017

Tuesday, June 14th, 2016

The Resort 2017 shows are revealing a really exciting, upbeat, bold and innovative intro to the main Spring collections which will show in September. I think it’s going to be a stellar season.

We’ll be sharing a few of our favourite resort shows, kicking off with Valentino. This collection is vast, especially by the usually compact standards of inter-season collections. It started off with the kind of quirky cute 50’s sweetness we have come to love as the Valentino Red label signature and then morphs into detailing and pattern that felt far more an extension of Valentino’s recent African inspired direction. Kind of mixed up, but utterly fabulous never the less.

The scale of placements, the slightly ‘off’ colour combinations, the mixture of utility with delicacy, the playful vibe. All of these are wonderfully spirit-lifting and rather enchanting. Oh, and plenty of Valentino’s signature red too.

Blink London reviews Pre Fall 2016 collections: Erdem

Thursday, January 21st, 2016

I hope that you enjoyed our Preen show review yesterday. Don’t forget to check out the review post of the Altuzarra pre Fall collection too. Now we take a look at the collection from another of London’s leading design lights, Erdem.

We have been huge fans since discovering this fabulously floral driven label soon after its launch. There’s lots more Erdem oriented Blink London posts if you’d like to take a look. We have adored watching how Erdem Moralioglu has evolved his very romantic, decorative, vintage feeling take on womenswear. In this pre Autumn Winter 2016 collection the beauty quotient is increased above and beyond all of the previous gorgeousness that we have utterly admired from this label.

The lightness and the texture, the movement and the delicacy, occassionally delineated with sharp cut black elements. There is a youthful brightness but also a deep sophistication to this collection which gives us the same feel that Erdem’s previous floral heavy seasons, but without that motif being used quite so boldly.

I’m not quite sure why but these shots also make me think of Sophia Coppola’s ‘Virgin Suicides’. Maybe that’s just the grouping of the girls, the lighting, the colour level or the poses- but as that is one of my favourite films from a style perspective, that is a very good thing.

The addition of the clever, clean-cut tailored looks that are scattered through this dress-driven offer, really helps back up the linear sharpness too. We especially adore that brilliantly bi-coloured trench.

“Blink” Inspiration: Valentino’s AW’15 Couture collection

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

Of course any fashion fan worth their salt has a soft spot for the ever-tanned Valentino, but I must admit that since he handed creative control over to Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, it has become an even more significant, wonderous and influential label.

The pair delivered a AW’15 Couture collection that was even more Valentino than I have ever seen before, but not so much about the man himself but more about utterly embracing the Roman roots of this brand. As we expressed rather over enthusiastically for the Giambattista Valli collection, we can also see super skilled craftsmanship at the beating heart of this collection. This is what couture is about, this is what luxury fashion is about; handworked product to a level that pretty much makes each garment a work of art equal to any painting or sculpture. This is far from everyday fashion as we can possibly get.

There was lots and lots of black, but with a lightness of touch, sheerness and delicacy that ensured it didn’t feel at all dour. Stunning brocades brought antique feeling pattern, flashing with metallic touches, which then lead to some stunningly all-gold looks fit for a Goddess. Enhancing the Roman theme there was also a scattering of stunningly ‘Papal’ red statements too.

Every look was accessorised with beautiful golden jewellery that looked as if it had been discovered in some ancient treasure haul, featuring pagan looking symbols that again hinted to the layers of history, culture and tradition that makes Rome such a unique, creatively rich and fascinating place.
