Kendrick Lamar ‘God is Gangsta’, Music Monday

Monday, February 22nd, 2016

This is the third time we’ve featured Kendrick Lamar as our #musicmonday and this time it’s not only because we are serious fans, it’s also to celebrate Lamar’s recent multiple Grammy wins. Much deserved Mr Lamar.

This is total creative innovation; a new voice, a new sensibility that takes hip hop and rap forward in a direction that is both relevant and smart, taking this musical artform forward while still referencing musical history from jazz, soul and funk traditions. If you haven’t spent some time with To Pimp a Butterfly yet, we suggest you should as a matter of musical urgency.

Missy Elliott ‘WTF’ ft. Pharrell Williams, Music Monday

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

I have two things to say about today’s #MusicMonday choice. Firstly, Missy Elliot! Secondly, this features Pharrell. What more could there possibly be to say? Oh, maybe just TURN THIS UP!

“Blink” Music: A$AP Rocky, ‘Everyday’ ft. Rod Stewart, Miguel, Mark Ronson

Monday, May 11th, 2015

I never thought the day would come that I could post a #MusicMonday that has something in it that appeals to my hip hop sensibilities as well as my Mum’s enduring love of Rod ‘Hot Legs’ Stewart! Well, that amazing day has come. A$AP Rocky‘s new track, ‘Everyday’ features Rodders, alongside Miguel and Mark Ronson. I’m not clear whether this is just a sample of Rod Stewart woven in to this new track, but I really hope they were actually in the studio together (unlikely but how amazing would that be?!?).

A$AP is a very gifted musician and I think you can hear that in this track, as in all of his work. We’ve actually featured him and A$AP Mob a couple of times already (Fashion Killa and Trillmatic) which is probably the most we have featured any one artist. This is a fresh musical genius right here, I mean he’s working with Rod Stewart for goodness sake!

You can download this track right now! For more #MusicMondays just click here.

“Blink” Music: Kendrick Lamar ‘i’

Monday, October 27th, 2014

Here it is. Better late in the day than never, and perfect to give your Monday afternoon a little lift.

We only had to hear this new Kendrick Lamar track once to be utterly in love. ‘i’ swings around the joy that is The Isley Brother’s ‘Who’s that Lady’. Lamar works with this ultra smooth inspiration to create an innovative sound that moves seamlessly from smooth to punchy, bright to deeply dark and soulfully disco to chippy hip hop. Very excited to hear more new stuff from this ground breaking artist.

‘i’ drops on the 9th November, and you can pre-order it here.

“Blink” Music: A$AP Mob ‘Trillmatic’

Monday, March 10th, 2014

In my heart I am a hip hop kid, regardless of the fact that I’m from the Home Counties rather than Far Rockaway… I guess the love affair was sealed when Flavor Flav called me a bitch. In a good way I think. And it was when he was still a Public Enemy too.

Well, this track, Trillmatic from A$AP Mob, takes me back to those early days of my hip hop discovery, in no small part due to the contribution from Wu Tang’s finest, Method Man. There’s a Nas style smoothness to this too, as well as some wonderfully rich, fluid and musically elegant samples. A$AP Mob is a hip hop collective, a little bit like a musical version of ACNE if you like. They incorporate artists and designers alongside musicians and producers. Their most famous son is A$AP Rocky, and Blink Music Monday alumni (check out Fashion Killa).

Really, even if you’re not that into hip hop, I think you’ll still love this just because the sun has decided to shine a bit, and it’s a Monday and you deserve a little musical distraction.
