“Blink” Travels: Flying- travel in style

Friday, July 31st, 2015

Since the beginning of the year I seem to have been on a pretty regular round of packing and unpacking suitcases, double checking I have my passport and triple checking all of my flight details. It’s been a wonderful time of travelling for clients, on research trips, on mini adventures and to spend time with far flung family. The next trip is all about spending 2 weeks doing as little as possible as I head away for my Summer hols. To make sure I have the speediest journey from home to sun lounger (with cocktail in hand), I have decided to opt for a hand luggage only flight.

With a bit of careful planning this doesn’t mean you have to scrimp on any of your luxuries or outfit changes, although to be honest I plan to pretty much be living in my bikini. A big tip from me is to choose tried and tested favourites from your Summer wardrobe, work with a pretty tight colour palette and then add in some bold accessories to help you make a small selection seem like a full Kim K’s closet of choices.

First you have to get your travel outfit right. I like to choose something that will get some wear through my hols too. I pretty much always choose jeans. Stretch Jamies from Topshop are a fav and really comfortable even for long haul.  This time I’ll be wearing those jeans with a kinda Chloe inspired swingy top from H&M. That way I start to get my holiday vibe going, and it also saves it from getting creased in my carry-on! My go-to handbag is this small but beautifully detailed fringed clutch from Oasis. It’s big enough for my wallet and all important documents but small enough to make sure I can see everything in it at a glance (I’m a bit of a checker).

If the airline is getting sniffy about one bag only per passenger I know that I can easily stuff this weeny handbag inside my carry-on suitcase. Actually as an aside, I would always suggest you quadruple check what number and size of bags your airline allows so you don’t get caught out. I found this table from Purple Parking really helpful as a good reference for that very thing.

Next is the shoes. I am in love with these nutty metallic gold wedge numbers. Perhaps you saw my video of them on Instagram? Well, wearing them not only makes my outfit more fabulous, it also frees up a ton of space in my suitcase. You see, not just a pretty face!

My 'carry on' beauty must haves!

My ‘carry on’ beauty must haves!

And talking of a pretty face, when working just with carry-on luggage and the volume restrictions you have to be extra smart. I use my Heidi Klein pouch as the clear bag required for liquids, and then when I’m away it reverts to its intended purpose as being a wet bikini bag. Having this pre-packed means no fuss for the security check. Any of my holiday favourites that come in small enough bottles get to come with, and then once you’re through security you can stock up on anything bigger in duty free.

I always fly makeup free with a generous slathering of moisturiser. Once safely in the air, I give my skin a freshen up with a Simple Micellar cleansing wipe and then pop on some Rodial Dragon’s Blood face mask (it doesn’t show so nobody need know!). You’re about to inflict lots of sunshine, seawater and aircon on your skin so my number one piece of advice is to ensure you’re maxed out on moisturisation from start to finish of your trip. I them swoosh on a bit of bronzer, mascara and a dash of lippy just before landing (no need to frighten the locals).

So there you have it, my plan to a happy and stylish holiday, even when travelling light. Roll on my departure date! For more of our posts about our travels, take a look here.

“Blink” Retail: H&M x Alexander Wang

Monday, October 6th, 2014

On November 6th H&M will launch their latest designer collaboration. Alexander Wang x H&M Collection will hit around 250 stores worldwide and online. Be ready boys and girls.

“I am honoured to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle,” Alexander Wang said.

With menswear and womenswear, this collection features original designs created by Wang specifically for H&M. There is plenty of his signature sporty style, and in fact much of the collection is actual performance wear which is exciting for all of us conscious gym bunnies! There’s also lots and lots of branding with the Wang name plastered all over the collection is quite a 90’s kinda feel. From what I’ve seen, I think this will be a really exciting and quite authentic feeling collaboration, but I don’t think I’ll be elbowing anyone out of the way for the swimming goggles…

“Alexander Wang is one of the most important voices in fashion today. He understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious. It feels incredible to be collaborating with him this year,” said Margareta van den Bosch, H&M’s creative advisor.

Oh, and the ad campaign is pretty darn gorgeous too, featuring some big name girls (including the ever gorgeous Joan Smalls and Natasha Poly) as well as some actual athletes (soccer player Andy Carroll and kickboxer Rivaldino dos Santos).

“Blink” Retail: Isabel Marant pour H&M

Thursday, November 14th, 2013

Yes, we were whipped into a fashion frenzy and joined the scrum at H&M this morning as well as getting RSI trying repeatedly (excessively and yet unsuccessfully) to get onto the website. I have to say that I succumbed to the excitement and experienced a fashion buzz, the like of which I have not felt for a very long time. Make no mistake, this was an EVENT. Yes, I did mean to shout that… Probably still a bit pumped…

I am a die hard, Isabel Marant fan. I wish I had the shopping budget to match my passionate dedication to the label, but as I’m sure I’m not the only one to notice, even the Etoile line has hoicked up in price season on season. Therefore this was a collaboration with super-duper levels of excitement and expectation around it (well, the Margiela collection was incredibly so close to the labels true handwriting the bar had been set high).

I hit the men’s section for the coats and sweats as well as shopping the womenswear collection, and made purchases from both. I can vouch for the fact that this is a collection that completely embraces the things that we love about Marant’s work. The dresses are 100% silk and designed with consideration to the use of print, precious trims and silhouette (very much the Isabel Marant cut). The coat that I bought is 100% wool in really lovely dense felted finish, and lined in a warmly quilted finish. Actually for me this is cozier and a better fit than the P coat I tried on from her mainline, own label collection.

All in all, congratulations to H&M for another brilliantly executed hook up, true to the collaborating designer’s aesthetic. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, even if my bank account is feeling a little pain…

“Blink” Retail: Isabel Marant x H&M= Fashion wishes coming true!

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Wwwwhhhhhhooooooaaaaaaaaaa. My fashion prayers have been answered! It’s a tough fashion life when you have champagne taste but a beer budget (oh the glamour of running your own business!). Well, it was a tough call until H&M introduced their genius fashion collaborations.

The designer who’s collection I, season after season, lust after the most is that of Isabel Marant. Can you imagine how excited I was this morning to wake up to an email from H&M announcing that its autumn collaboration is this very Parisian designer! With her effortless, urban yet boho chic style, Isabel Marant has single handedly changed our perception of French fashion as well as created trends imitated by the whole fashion high street.

Put 14th November in your diary with multiple reminders, alarms and extra post it notes just to be sure, as this is the launch date for this collection in around 250 stores worldwide and online, the collection features clothing and accessories for women and teenagers. Isabel Marant will also, for the first time, create a collection for men.

“I am flattered by this collaboration: H&M works with the best designers and this invitation is an exciting honour. I aim at creating something real, that women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian: you dress up, but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy. The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude. Everything can be mixed following one’s own instincts: my take on fashion is all about personality” says Isabel Marant.

“Blink” Retail: Behind the Scenes of the MMM for H&M Campaign

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

To say that the “Blink” team is excited about the impending MMM for H&M collaboration, would be somewhat of an understatement. I have already mentally incorporated all of my favourite pieces in to my Winter wardrobe. Let me just tell you that if you’re in my way as I try to get to the over-sized P coat, you are in trouble…

To help keep the frenzy fresh, H&M sent over this fabulous behind the scenes look at the making of the campaign video, directed by the brilliant, British artist, photographer and film-director Sam Taylor-Johnson. Shot on a deserted Paris street corner, the atmospheric images feature models Julia Nobis and Jamie Bochert, as well as the dancer Cyril Baldy. The campaign will appear on television worldwide from November 8th, as well as online and outdoor, with the collection being launched on November 15th in around 230 stores worldwide.

I suggest you start sharpening your elbows now…

“Blink” New Designers: Stine Riis with H&M

Friday, August 17th, 2012

We were really lucky to be invited to Copenhagen Fashion Week. Many thanks to Gregersen Communication and CFW. Also, additional huge thanks to Stine Riis. You may have read some of our previous posts about Stine. I had the pleasure of mentoring Stine just before she graduated. Her stunning final collection not only won a prize when it was shown at LCF‘s graduate show, but Stine went on to win the first ever H&M Design Award.

The H&M prize was a huge boost to Stine’s start as a designer presenting her own label, with key pieces from the winning collection launching in selected H&M stores exclusively in the UK during London Fashion Week on 17th September. The collection will then be available from 20th September in selected H&M stores in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. A selection of garments will also be available online.

Stine has been working with the H&M design team to develop chosen pieces from the collection, including a wool skirt and jacket with patent leather panels, a winter coat with strong shoulder details, a silk and patent leather blouse with a transparent back, and a knitted jumper with leather detailing.

“I can’t wait to see the collection at H&M! I want to see women wearing my designs and adapting them to suit their own style. Developing the collection with H&M has been a great learning experience, and their support has been so important to me. Key pieces from the collection are the jackets and the coat, as well as the skirt with leather panels” says Stine Riis, designer.

I cannot wait to be able to buy Stine’s collection. Well, done, and well deserved! We have some coverage from Stine’s SS’13 show at Copenhagen Fashion Week dropping a little later today too, so watch out.

“Blink” Retail: H&M gets Sporty

Friday, July 27th, 2012

A very smart window scheme choice from H&M, from two perspectives. Firstly The London Olympics launch today, just in case you’d missed that little bit of information! We’ve all gone a little sporting mad, and even though we were missing the Olympic spirit in the “Blink” office for a while, I have to say that the excitement has now truly taken hold. Come on Team GB!

The second good reason for this window scheme is H&M’s very well timed launch of their ‘Sports’ collection- although none of the mannequins actually seem to be wearing it, which is a little bit of an oversight we think. Cool windows none the less.

“Blink” Retail: H&M’s Dragon Tattoo Collection

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

We’re huge fans of Stieg Larsson’s books and can’t wait for the film (mainly due to the undeniable charms of Mr Daniel Craig), and when we received the press release from H&M about their collection inspired by Lisbeth Salander’s punk/ Goth/ Rock chick look, we were more than a little excited.

This collection landed in stores yesterday, 14th December, with slightly less fanfare than the Versace hook up, but we’re quite pleased about that too- less elbow sharpening required… Trish Summerville, the costume designer of the film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, designed this collection, so it has a great pedigree. Check out the video. Enjoy!

“Blink” Retail: H&M collaborates with Marni

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Just when you’ve gotten over the drama of buying your Versace for H&M pieces, we have H&M’s next amazing collaborative collection to announce.

H&M announce the next collaboration is to be with the wonderful luxury Italian, print focused, brilliantly creative and somewhat esoteric brand, Marni. The Spring collection for women, men and the home will be available from 8th March, 2012 in around 260 stores worldwide and online. The collection will feature many Marni signature prints and feature the ‘essence of Marni’.

Marni founder and Creative Director,  Consuelo Castiglioni says “I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favorite pieces in signature fabrics and prints. As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colours, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphic adding sporty utilitarian elements”.

“We all love the collection here at H&M and we believe that our customers will too. Marni has such a modern touch with everything they do, mixing prints and accessories in a playful but chic way. It’s fantastic to see how Consuelo Castiglioni coordinates her designs, matching new combinations of print and colour, with such incredible craftsmanship behind every piece. The collection will arrive in stores at just the perfect time, as a lovely statement for spring“. Margareta van den Bosch, Creative Advisor H&M.

Marni’s collection for H&M has all the freedom and experimentation for which the label is renowned, with all-over prints in strong colours all intended to be worn together in layers that both match and clash. For women, the colours are vivid and the prints are bold, be they African inspired or simpler colour blocks. The silhouettes are all Marni staples, with full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped trousers and jacquard knit, and fabrics range from silk to crisp cotton poplin. To finish the complete look the collection also includes jewellery, shoes, bags and scarves. For men, the colours and fabrics are softened for a relaxed take on menswear staples that is truly Marni. The use of print is subtle, often as a lining or as a contrast detail for shirts, the silhouette a modern and relaxed take on masculine classics.

Blink Retail: H&M’s collaborating with Versace

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Donatella has executed a complete volte-face (and what a face it is) and decided that it is now a good thing for Versace to collaborate with a high street brand.  The exclusive collection for H&M, launching mid November, will reference iconic Versace collections with lots of signature studded leather, print and pattern- oh, and some wonderful accessories too. The collection will include womenswear, menswear and a few pieces for the home too. In addition to the Autumn offer, Donatella Versace has also designed a pre-spring collection for H&M so there will be even more to look forward to if you love what’s delivered in November.

“I am thrilled to be collaborating with H&M and to have the opportunity of reaching their wide audience. The collection will be quintessential Versace, perfect for H&M and Versace fans everywhere,” says Donatella Versace.

“Versace is one of the most important brands of recent times and their collection for H&M will be glamorous and flamboyant – everything Versace stands for. Donatella Versace is sharing with us iconic designs from the archives. This is such a celebratory collaboration and is perfect for the festive season,” says Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M.
