“Blink” Inspiration: Fashion Drawing, Tools of the Trade

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

If you keep up with us on here or via our various social media accounts then you’ll know that, as part of our retail reports or within a creative consultancy project, we produce original design work. I love the days when I get to have a pencil in my hand instead of a mouse. Occasionally I share this pleasure across the team, but I must admit that I do tend to keep this job for myself!

As a fashion student I didn’t think I was particularly gifted when it came to doing the various types of fashion drawings (of which there are a few!), but over time I have developed my own style, my approach, my handwriting I guess. As I tell my design students, there is a huge difference between being a fashion designer and a fashion illustrator. Some particularly lucky folks may well be both but if you aren’t so blessed then it’s all about finding your own way to express your ideas.

I thought you might like to see my tools of the trade for the fashion flats that I produce (quite literally an interpretation of a design if was, well, laid flat). I am obsessive about the pens and pencils that I use and my selection has evolved over many years of trial and error.

The pencil should be HB, but more importantly it is sharpened with a scalpel so that I can create difference edges and effects with it. Next comes the fine-line pen, and this is always a Muji 0.38 rollerball. Actually this is the pen I use for everything, everyday. I must have a kajillion of them! After that I use a Letraset Promarker in Ice Grey 1 for shadowing, folds and softness. Then the whole thing is outlined in a Pentel ‘Sign’ pen which is fibre tipped and gives a dense, clean line. Oh, last but not least is the Pentel Micro Correct which is a brilliantly precise Tippex style white-out product to clean up any wobbles, marks or mistakes.

So there you have it, an insight into my pencil case, which is Isabel Marant of course… Perhaps I’ll share another insight with you soon about my obsession for a specific type of paper to draw on. Oh the excitement!

“Blink” Accessories: Wanderlust, SS’14

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

Here’s  few looks from a very diverse selection of labels, but all with a similar inspiration source in mind. This is about the wanderer, the traveller, the global magpie. It’s very much the forever reference point for seemingly the one and only festival look. It’s faux hippy, flash-packer in a very bold, statement way and we love it for it’s unapologetic, bright, stylish strength.

“Blink” Accessories: Sports Luxe with Ray-Ban’s new Aviator

Thursday, May 1st, 2014

Although we do love a bit of the Iris Apfel approach of ‘more is more’ when it comes to accessories, there are times when just the one classic item will do. For us the Ray-Ban Aviator is one of those forever classics that is perfect season in, season out (but never indoors or at night…).

We spotted this new red and gold model when cruising around the John Lewis website, checking out their refreshed approach to fashion. Have you seen their ‘Edit’ pages? Good old JLP is really upping their game in the fashion stakes, working with experts like Jess Cartner-Morley to deliver concise and relevant fashion packages with authority. So much so that I went in for these gorgeous Ray-Ban shades, investing in their Sports Luxelook.

As John Lewis have shown in their neat video, these are perfect to complete your sports inspired look, but we think there’s more to the Aviator than that so we headed up West to prove our point. Whether high end or high street, youthful or more sophisticated, festival or fete these are the shades that will keep you from squinting in high style.

Starting off with a festival ready look from Monki

Or how about a 50’s inspired, sweet vintage look from Chinti and Parker?

Or a streets sports cool, pattern mash up from Etre Cecile (our new Tshirt obsession) and Karssen?

Or perhaps you’re more high end Hippy Chic a la Isabel Marant?

Are you feeling inspired to rock your Aviators in a new way, or maybe to invest in some if you’re Ray-Banless? Which ever it is, we had loads of fun doing this and have fallen in love with our new shades all over again. Thanks John Lewis!

“Blink” Accessories: Vibram boots

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

Cruising around the colourful, innovatively styled shapes in & Other Stories inevitably leads to some drooling over their amazing accessories and shoes. In this store you’ll find some of the most exciting, creative and very well priced jewels, bags and shoes on the high street.

Most of their pieces are sharply shaped, clean cut and extreme in styling, colour and materials, so aside from the amazing offer of super stylish Nike trainers, these Vibram boots really stood out.

There is something so very pleasing about these ultra-functional, sturdily constructed Italian boots. The label was founded in the 30’s and is rooted in outdoors active footwear with a sturdy rubber sole. A strange choice for & Other Stories perhaps, when you consider the brand’s handwriting, but also looking really good right now and certainly ringing my bell, very much in the same way that these chunky Isabel Marant, snowshoe styled boots, with hidden heel of course.

“Blink” Retail: Isabel Marant pour H&M

Thursday, November 14th, 2013

Yes, we were whipped into a fashion frenzy and joined the scrum at H&M this morning as well as getting RSI trying repeatedly (excessively and yet unsuccessfully) to get onto the website. I have to say that I succumbed to the excitement and experienced a fashion buzz, the like of which I have not felt for a very long time. Make no mistake, this was an EVENT. Yes, I did mean to shout that… Probably still a bit pumped…

I am a die hard, Isabel Marant fan. I wish I had the shopping budget to match my passionate dedication to the label, but as I’m sure I’m not the only one to notice, even the Etoile line has hoicked up in price season on season. Therefore this was a collaboration with super-duper levels of excitement and expectation around it (well, the Margiela collection was incredibly so close to the labels true handwriting the bar had been set high).

I hit the men’s section for the coats and sweats as well as shopping the womenswear collection, and made purchases from both. I can vouch for the fact that this is a collection that completely embraces the things that we love about Marant’s work. The dresses are 100% silk and designed with consideration to the use of print, precious trims and silhouette (very much the Isabel Marant cut). The coat that I bought is 100% wool in really lovely dense felted finish, and lined in a warmly quilted finish. Actually for me this is cozier and a better fit than the P coat I tried on from her mainline, own label collection.

All in all, congratulations to H&M for another brilliantly executed hook up, true to the collaborating designer’s aesthetic. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, even if my bank account is feeling a little pain…

“Blink” Events: Isabel Marant for H&M- the interview

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

Can you contain your excitement? The answer to that question in the “Blink” studio is ‘barely!’ Yes, the date is fast approaching for the launch of the Isabel Marant collection with H&M. Start making space in your wardrobe, sharpening your elbows and stashing some spends. This is already one of the biggest fashion events of the year, and it hasn’t even happened yet! Have a look at our previous post to catch up on all the launch deets.

We’re delighted to share with you an interview with Marant herself, talking about the collection.

Isabel on the H&M collection: “I design for everybody. Women of any age, young girls, their mothers, young grandmothers, and now for the first time with H&M, my male friends who have always begged me to do menswear. Usually I know by instinct what will sell well. I cannot say how, but it always happens. I have the exact same feeling with this H&M collection.”

Isabel on the launch in store: “After six months of working hard on this collection, it’s thrilling that the actual clothes are finally reaching the shops. It will happen simultaneously worldwide: this makes me even more excited. The collection is made up of clothes with a real attitude, and I put a lot of effort into it: the clothes are something that I hope the H&M audience will respond well to.”

Isabel on designing the collection:“There’s been such enthusiasm surrounding the whole project, and the sheer passion for fashion that we share with the H&M team. It’s been a thrill to get out of my comfort zone and try something new – in this case, producing a compact collection on a large scale for a huge audience at a democratic price. As a designer who likes challenges but wants to dress real people in their daily lives, I could not ask for anything better.”

“Blink” Retail: Isabel Marant x H&M= Fashion wishes coming true!

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Wwwwhhhhhhooooooaaaaaaaaaa. My fashion prayers have been answered! It’s a tough fashion life when you have champagne taste but a beer budget (oh the glamour of running your own business!). Well, it was a tough call until H&M introduced their genius fashion collaborations.

The designer who’s collection I, season after season, lust after the most is that of Isabel Marant. Can you imagine how excited I was this morning to wake up to an email from H&M announcing that its autumn collaboration is this very Parisian designer! With her effortless, urban yet boho chic style, Isabel Marant has single handedly changed our perception of French fashion as well as created trends imitated by the whole fashion high street.

Put 14th November in your diary with multiple reminders, alarms and extra post it notes just to be sure, as this is the launch date for this collection in around 250 stores worldwide and online, the collection features clothing and accessories for women and teenagers. Isabel Marant will also, for the first time, create a collection for men.

“I am flattered by this collaboration: H&M works with the best designers and this invitation is an exciting honour. I aim at creating something real, that women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian: you dress up, but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy. The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude. Everything can be mixed following one’s own instincts: my take on fashion is all about personality” says Isabel Marant.

“Blink” Inspiration: Isabel Marant at Liberty

Friday, May 11th, 2012

So, you may have seen my tweet yesterday, after indulging in a little fashion retail porn in Liberty. I popped in just to have a recreational smooch around the new deliveries, but I didn’t make it far past the rail of Isabel Marant. I knew it was a mistake to actually try some on, but I couldn’t help myself. I stood in the changing room wondering what I could put into hock so I could bring just a couple of pieces home with me…

If, like me, you’re not quite up to filling your wardrobe at this price level, then lots of high street brands have been ‘inspired’ by this collection too. These tie dye jeans from Topshop aren’t half bad as a starting point to build this mood.

“Blink” style: What to wear for Spring Summer 2012!

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

So, here we are in 2012. Happy New Year!

It may well be gale force winds out there today, but we are fully committed to wearing the new Spring looks. To be honest, they may be proceeded by some thermals and then a little concealed under a really big coat, but the key thing is that we’ll be wearing them! In our dream shopping basket for Spring’12, these are the looks we would be investing in. Care of the wonderful Style.com, we’ve trawled the shows and come up with our most adored looks to share with you, from Giles, Stella, Isabel, Clements Ribeiro, Louis Vuitton and Burberry. In reality, we’ll be buying maybe one or two posh bits, and the rest will be created through the magic of the brilliant British high street…
