“Blink” Music: Hudson Mohawke ‘Warriors’

Monday, June 15th, 2015

Hudson Mohawke is actually Scot, Ross Birchard. He is currently causing quite the stir with his innovative take on the electronic music sound featured in this track, Warriors, as well as his imminently dropping album, ‘Lantern’ out on the 16th (tomorrow!).

The video has a low-tech, natural and relaxed vibe which sits pretty well with the soft and mellow sound of the track. It also gives you the chance to focus on the music itself which is the absolute star of the piece and needs no bells, whistles, fireworks and effects to reassure us of its brilliance.

Can’t wait to hear the whole album. If you’d like to see our other music posts, then just click here.

“Blink” New Music: Young Fathers ‘Nest’

Monday, June 8th, 2015

This track, ‘Nest‘, has been the deciding factor in whether we have the feels for Young Fathers or not. It’s a yes from us after listening intently and repeatedly. This Edinburgh based group are delivering a really innovative sound that is founded in their hip hop roots but certainly not any kind of hip hop we’ve heard before.

There style is sparse and yet multi layered, with a kind of under-produced/ bedroom-recorded sound that we love for its honesty and rawness. Young Fathers seem to have found a space in between musical genres that is really appealing, really fresh but still somewhat recognisable- like they have distilled lots of our favourite musical reference points from the 80’s, 90’s and reworked at them in an utterly current way. In short, this is cool, they are cool, we feel cooler for having listened to it. If you like this track, then check out their new album, ‘White Men are Black Men too‘.

“Blink” Music: The Maccabees ‘Marks to Prove It’

Monday, May 18th, 2015

If you watch this you can forgo your morning caffeine hit. The song in tandem with the rather stress-inducing video will get your heart pumping better than any double espresso. Phew.

‘Marks to Prove It’ is exhausting and exhilarating. The musical equivalent of a massive surge of adrenaline. Not only is it a stunner of a track, it’s also the first we’ve heard from The Maccabees in AGES! The band have been locked away creating their new album, leaving us bereft of their unique, innovative, raw, British sound. I personally cannot wait to hear the new album. Hurry up Maccabees and give us some more details!

“Blink” Music: Hozier, ‘Someone New’

Monday, April 27th, 2015

This will make your Monday even better than it is already (it’s great already though right?). We do love ourselves a bit of Hozier. Gutted to have missed his set at Wilderness last year (we were in the spa hot tubs… oops) but hoping to catch him live this year.

A little more about the artist himself, Andrew Hozier-Byrne is an Irish singer/ songwriter from a musical family. He released his first album last year and we love ever single track on it. His biggest hit so far, ‘Take me To Church’, still sounds as fresh now as when it was released last year. I think the secret to this is his absolute grounding in a bluesy, heartfelt and soulful musicality that feels absolutely timeless.

Not only is this track, ‘Someone New’ epic from an aural perspective, the accompanying video is pretty darn hot too. If you’re a Game of Thrones or Elementary fan, you’ll recognise the leading lady.

“Blink” Music: Lianne la Havas and A.O.S.O.O.N

Lianne La Havas, she's back with a new album this summer! (image with thanks to Pinterest), Blink London

Lianne La Havas, she’s back with a new album this summer! (image with thanks to Pinterest)

Last night I was invited to a small but perfectly formed gig at Shoreditch House. It was an immediate ‘yes please!’ as the artist performing was Lianne La Havas who I have been missing since I feel head over heels for her and her exquisite musical talent, through her debut album ‘Is Your Love Big Enough’. Lianne is a mighty musical talent wrapped up in a teeny, charming, shy, sweet and beautiful package. Armed just with her guitar and a mic she absolutely wowed with some tracks from her first album as well as some teasers from the new album which is chalked to drop this Summer. I for one cannot wait.

Before Lianne came on we were treated to a set from South London duo, A.O.S.O.O.N. (that’s ‘AlotOfSomethingOutOfNothing’). The combination of Marisa Hylton (vocals and guitar) and Manny Folorunso (bass) was a stripped back, honest, funky and deep. I really love their sound and hope that you will too. Today’s #MusicMonday is one of the tracks we heard last night, ‘Under’. This is from an EP that they dropped late last year called ‘What is This About’. Fingers crossed we’ll see them popping up on this Summer’s festival circuit.

“Blink” Music: Lion Babe ‘Wonder Woman’

Monday, March 23rd, 2015

Here’s our Music Monday post and it’s so hot off the presses there’s no video yet. Keep an eye out for one though as it’s sure to be very cool.

This is Lion Babe, an American duo made up of producer/multi-instrumentalist, Lucas Goodman, and singer-songwriter, Jillian Hervey (who is gaining additional notoriety for her amazing lush locks). There signature funky sound has been enhanced on this track by the inclusion of Pharrell Williams‘ skills producing and contributing vocals.

I love Hervey’s vocal tone as well as her femenist vibe- reminding me lots of Eryka Badu but in a less incesey way, although just as super cool.

This band is looking to go far in 2015 with this accessible yet innovative sound. ‘Wonder Woman’ is taken from their debut album which is dropping imminently. Watch out for it as based on this, I think it’ll be a goodun.

“Blink” Music: Lethal Bizzle ft. Diztortion “Fester Skank”

Monday, March 9th, 2015

This is probably our most commercial #MusicMonday for some time, but we think this new Lethal Bizzle track is just too irresistible. A hip wiggling hook teamed with some really smart lyrics. What more could you ask for on a Monday? Just let yourself go and have a “Fester Skank” moment. We are sure you’ll feel better afterwards.

“Blink” Music: Tobias Jesso Jr ‘How Could You Babe’

Monday, March 2nd, 2015

With some of pretty influential names backing Tobia Jesso Jr as a talent to watch, I can imaging that he might be feeling some pressure. Actually, based on the soft, mellow, swooping and gentle musicality that he produces, it seems that Tobias is too chilled a guy to feel any stress at all. He exudes a very, very laid back vibe- even though this song is one of loss, betrayal and heartbreak. It feels very much like he is the perfect blend of the open-hearted Canadian (he’s from Vancouver eh), blended with some Californian wide-eyed-hippyness (he was based in LA for several years) giving his approach that mellow 70’s edge.

Man and piano making music in perfect sweet, angst-free union, and making our Monday super chilled for a change (for which we thank you whole-heartedly Tobias). Watch out for his debut album, Goon, dropping middle of this month.

“Blink” Music: Common and John Legend ‘Glory’

Monday, February 16th, 2015

Perhaps you spotted on our Twitter feed that we saw ‘Selma’ last week. It left me deeply moved, rather tense and also with a damp patch across my top as I split my drink over myself during a particularly shocking scene…

I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. The approach, production, cinematography and acting is all sparkling brilliant, looking unflinchingly at this particularly ugly period. I can’t speak about this film without specifically praising the British members of the cast, and David Oyelowo in particular.

Now back to the music, as it is a ‘Music Monday’ post and I’ve chosen this track, ‘Glory’ from the film, by John Legend and Common. Common also plays one of the key characters in the film. They combine both of their musical styles perfectly to deliver a heartfelt, rousing song that plays over the closing credits of ‘Selma’ and also stands alone as a great piece of music.

“Blink” Music: The Weeknd ‘Earned It’

Monday, February 9th, 2015

This #MusicMonday comes with a warning: there are bottoms and some boobs, wiggling and some jiggling in this video.

So, consider yourself warned, and now you can enjoy ‘Earned it’ by The Weeknd which features on the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘ soundtrack. So, I guess this counts as part of the rather minimal Valentine’s coverage we’ll be featuring as the movie premiere’s on Friday, just in time to get you all in a pickle for the 14th.

Enough about that already well promoted movie and back to this artist. The Weeknd is the stage name of Canadian, Abel Tesfaye. He is a recording artist as well as a record producer. He has slowly and subtly built up his following since 2010 when he started uploading tracks to YouTube and releasing mixtapes. That slow progression has enabled Tesfaye to craft a really fresh take on the ‘bump and grind’ variety of R&B. He brings in layers of complexity through his lilting vocals blended with a musicality of production that kind of intertwines through the track, at times overwhelming his voice and then at others uplifting or harmonising with it. It makes for very sexy listening. No wonder he’s been featured on the Fifty Shades soundtrack.
