“Blink” Arts: Kim Zoe Wagner’s Beautiful Birds

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

I was recently sent a press release from the lovely folks at Pitfield London, and the image it featured was just too gorgeous to resist sharing it with you. The picture features a perky looking little budgie type bird set against a brilliantly patterned background, all looking rather technicolour and very engaging. As I read on, I discovered that this is the work of Kim Zoe Wagner, a taxidermist…

So these wee fellas are not so lively after all. I should point out that none of the creatures that Kim works with are killed just to create these artworks. I like to think that they all fell off of their perches after a long and happy life in the care of someone who loved them very much. Taxidermy has been a relatively recently rediscovered art, and although it’s a little too macabre for me to have in my own home I can absolutely appreciate the beauty of the clever and creative work happening in this field.

This exhibition opened yesterday (15th July), and is on until 28th August.

“Blink” Retail: Pitfield

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

I’ve been meaning to track down the ‘Pitfield’ store for an age, so I’m delighted to say that I have now finally made it, and done most of my Christmas shopping there to boot!

East London locals, interior designer Shaun Clarkson and textile designer Paul Brewster have created a really rather unique store/ curiosity shop that reflects their eclectic, vintage inspired tastes as well as being an exhibition space, a florists and a cafe too! The perfect ‘one stop shop’ if you ask me. Brewster has work with designers such as Versace, Gianfranco Ferre and Diane von Furstenberg and most of us have probably been in a signature Shaun Clarkson‐designed environment, be it the Harvey Nichols bar, the bar at the Oxo Tower or the Dukes Hotel Bar, so they were both extremely well equiped to create a really fantastic store with a really compelling selection of product.
Pitfield plays host to a constantly rotating exhibition of local London designers, craftspeople and artists sitting alongside well‐established international brands, design classics, re‐invented items, vintage pieces and Clarkson’s and Brewster’s own designs.
The cafe is a gorgeous compliment to the store, plus if you like the chair you’re sitting on to eat your freshly baked cake, then you can most likely buy it!

“Blink” Inspiration: Curtis Jere

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

I was flicking through the latest edition of Living etc, day dreaming about living in one of these amazingly pristine homes, when I spotted a beautiful wall sculpture in the spread featuring the home of Shaun Clarkson and Paul Brewster, owners of lifestyle shop, Pitfield, in Hoxton.

Clarkson and Brewster's bedroom, from Living etc (June'12)

The wall sculpture is a Curtis Jere. Jere was a collaboration between artists/ sculptors, Jerry Fels and Curtis Freiler, who started working together in the late 1950s, through the 1960s in to the late 1970s. Known best for their naturalistic yet stylized wall sculptures, but they also created stunning free standing pieces too. I have been coveting a Curtis Jere piece since first seeing their work in one of my favourite style movies, ‘The Lives of Others’. I have the trailer here for you, but it doesn’t show much of the stunning apartment interior that features a wonderful Jere wall sculpture.

Here’s some images of Curtis Jere’s work just to share the joy with you a bit more. I hope this is inspiring to you even if you’re not as much of a mid Century design nut as I am.
