Blink Graphics: Autumn ’11 Highlights

We asked our resident graphics expert, Christian, to select his favourites from the Autumn ’11 quarterly ‘Graphics’ report. He scoured the 300 or so images that make up this report and pulled out those that he felt are the most inspirational and innovative. This is the penultimate issue of this report (boo!) but we have added another new report to our offer which means we have to refocus our energy. We still find graphic art incredibly inspirational, however so we will still be dedicating the occasional post to this theme, as well as adding in some great T shirt graphics into our ‘Jersey’ report.

St Bride at the Vintage Festival

The art of Letterpress is in the process of a massive revival at the moment. Keep your eye out for one off posters and letterpress woodblock fonts. Check out St Bride for lectures and shows, always interesting.

Bacon Street, East London

Bacon Street, East London.

Loving this line drawing graffiti style, differing from the norm.

The Peter Blake bus, spotted at the Vintage Festival

The Peter Blake bus is a wonder, pure British eccentric design.

Buxton Street, East London

Some street art by Anthony Lister, always great to see up. A very interesting artist.

Anthony Burrill

Letterpress goodness by Anthony Burrill. What’s not to like?

Ardingly Antiques Fair

I love old signage, a disappearing art which is a shame. Great reference here.

Blink Travels: Paris Graphic, Le Monochrome!

Here’s almost our final hit of inspiration from Paris. We do have a wee bit more for you tomorrow..

This one is for you guys who are more graphically oriented. We really love street art, and Paris has a very special take on it. We found some really beautifully executed stickers and posters, as well as stencils and sketches. The over riding mood was monochromatic, with the odd flash of colour. Here are our favourites for you.

Streetstyle: Brick Lane

Here’s another from Asta’s style spotting outing to East London’s streets. We really like this girl’s look. Its not a little 80’s inspired, but there are some very personal quirks in the look too, from the platform boots to the preppy feel of her specs and satchel style bag. Loving the backdrop too, with some brilliant East End street art just to complete the mood.

Thanks Asta!

Blink Travels- Istanbul Street Art

As you probably have spotted from previous ‘Graphics’ posts, or seen in our quarterly ‘Graphics’ report, at “Blink” we are huge fans of street art. It was an extra special treat to see so much amazing street art in Istanbul. It seemed to be quite focused in Beyoglu, where we were staying, leaving the more ancient and historical sections of the city pretty unscathed- as it should be.

At each turn, I spotted really interesting variations on stencil designs- small and punchy. There were larger more artistically created pieces too. My favourites, however were the multiple variations on the yellow fist design. Does anyone know who these are by? I felt like maybe these were from Istanbul’s version on Eine perhaps- a specific look and handwriting around a very focused theme.

Istanbul is home to the incredible street art focused Milk Gallery which, if you’re a fan of this art-form, is one for the ‘must visit’ list.

Blink Inspiration: Cut and Paste Art

We were, camera in hand, searching East London finding great new street art for the Autumn edition of the ‘Graphics’ report when we came across a really innovative looking piece on Redchurch Street. As we were ooh-ing and ahh-ing, admiring this variation on the Virgin Mary, the artist himself stepped up.

Ernesto Muniz is a scalpel wielding genius. He very kindly sent us some images of other works from the streets of London as well as his home town of Mexico City. There’s also some really interesting creations with vinyl records. The use of religious iconography reflects Muniz’ Latino roots and makes for some really innovative artwork.

If you like what you see here, Ernesto can be contacted at munizer@hotmail.com. He’ll also be exhibiting alongside artists like Banksy at Liverpool’s Corke Gallery in November.

Blink Events- Mutate

Here’s a great post from our brilliant Blinkers, Natalie and Tilly. Thanks girls!

Under the Westway this Christmas there was an unexpected treat for the shoppers in Portobello. This year Mutate Britain (One Foot in the Grove) migrated from Shoreditch to Ladbroke Grove and featured an eclectic and unexpected array of underground street art which ranged from huge, fire-breathing mechanical sculptures to tongue-in-cheek graffiti, prints, ceramics, furniture, installation, glass, murals, books and even pole-dancing robots! This was a fantastic show of all things beautiful but deadly.

This art event was created and collated by The Mutoid Waste Company and The Cordy House Family who were determined to take art out of the rarefied atmosphere of a formal gallery and into a far more relaxed space where it could appeal to a much broader cross section. Mix this with the urban backdrop and a Grove appropriate sound track and you have an event that was more like a festival atmosphere than a traditional art space. Brilliant.

Graphics- A favourite from Berlin

We have just issued our Summer edition of the “Graphics” report. Phew, what a whopper! It’s probably our report with the broadest appeal. There’s inspiration for T shirt brands, labeling and packaging designers, advertising, signage and probably a whole lot more that we haven’t even thought of yet…

Here’s one of our favourites from the report, care of our beautiful Berlin based Blinker. We love the humour as well as the stunning colour and brilliant execution.
