London Fashion Week: Streetstyle, Feeling Flat

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

I know we said we had posted all of the streetstyle, but then we spotted these great shoes and didn’t want to deprive you of this insight.

So, you will have spotted some amazing towering heels in all of the other London Fashion Week posts. Just to show an even and balanced view, we have decided to share some of these super smart flatties with you too. Building on the androgynous direction, capturing the crepe soled, brother creeper revival as well as saying hello again to those tried and trusted DM‘s- the flat shoe was not only a great style choice, but also a very sensible option when the rest of the fash pack was teetering over Somerset House‘s cobbles and praying for the moment they could slip off their Loubi’s and slip on some corn plasters…

London Fashion Week: Streetstyle, Needles Out

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

As we near the end of our London Fashion Week coverage, and we look at one of our favourite categories. For the past couple of season’s the knit report has been the easiest one for us to fill month on month. There is so much fabulous innovation happening in this field, and the fashion crowd certainly embraced that at this Fashion Week, rocking some really lovely knitted looks.

Reflecting what we have been seeing at retail, hairy and fluffy knits are super important, as are textural as well as patterned looks. As expected, these themes were taken to the extreme in some cases at LFW, but still looked super stylish. We love the surprise elements in some of these knitted looks, where knits are encased or interspersed with sheers or pattern is blown out and artfully placed. Proportions and detailing are incredibly important, especially when you are working a pretty simplistic knit style. So, we think that this Autumn Winter knits will be super important ( I know this may just sound like common sense and all…) so wear your wool with pride, feel simple chic in cashmere and embrace the hairy effects with lots angora bunny fluff.

London Fashion Week: Streetstyle, Colour Free

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Its no news that fashion loves black. Now are you sitting down, because I can exclusively reveal that fashion loves colour too! I know, its a shocker. Well, more of the colour on Monday. Today we focus on a non-colour statement. This is all about monochrome,  head to toe black, flashes of white and even some diversity into soft greys.

London Fashion Week‘s fashion pack showed us how to make all black look fresh with the addition of textural layering, highlight accessories, matte and gloss combinations, dense and sheer, and some eye popping geometrics and graphic effects. You see, in fashion, sweet thing, black and white is very rarely, well, black and white…

London Fashion Week: Streetstyle, Print and Pattern

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

This London Fashion Week was awash with gorgeous print and pattern. Some were identifiable as, or inspired by hot print looks from the Autumn ’11 catwalks, but the ones that we loved the most were the looks that reflected the wearer’s aesthetic rather than the designers. We think that a few of these are certainly vintage, and we really like that they all feel chosen purely for their beauty rather than the beauty of the back neck label.

Its hard to summarize any specific direction as the looks were wonderfully individual on the whole. ‘Colouful’ covers some of them, with a very broad brush stroke statement, but possibly a better thing to focus on is how they are being worn. We are really into those that styled up a couple of print and pattern looks together. This approach created some really gorgeously energetic and exciting effects. So, if in doubt about how to rock pattern this Autumn Winter, we say, go big, go bold, go bright and go multiple!

London Fashion Week: Streetstyle, Warm Leatherette

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Actually most of this isn’t leatherette, its proper leather- but I just couldn’t resist the title (in reference to one of my all time fav Grace Jones songs in case you’re wondering). London Fashion Week was such an inspirational event this season, and in no small way due to the ultra stylish attendees. If you look back at historical LFW coverage you’ll see that this is the perfect barometer for the trends that are going to come through strongly over the season ahead, so take note and start your shopping list from the directions we’ve highlighted this week.

Leather was a material being backed by the fashion pack, and not only as the ubiquitous Biker jacket (thanks Burberry for keeping that one alive for Autumn). The newest direction in leather, however, is the skirt. From mini skater skirts to minxy pencils and on into midi length, full A lines.

London Fashion Week: Topshop Unique, SS12 Show. Celebrity FROW

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

So, you’ve seen the show coverage. Now see who was in attendance. We have some fabulous streetstyle shots from the fashion crowd that headed to Waterloo for the Topshop Unique show, but this post is all about the celebrity FROWers who got the flash bulbs popping and the paps in a lather.

I have mentioned that Anna Wintour was there, but what I didn’t mention was how the presence of several burly bodyguards put me right off trying to get a shot, so she won’t be featured here. We do have some other good spots for you though. Bip Ling (blogger, stylist, artist, DJ…) and Eliza Doolittle both wore pieces from the AW11 Unique collection. Olivia Palermo (what is her official job title?) looked lovely and very shiny haired, if a little predictable. Kelis, someone who’s style we really admire, looked cool in a slightly rock meets rockabilly way. Nicola Roberts either need to get a stylist or sack the one she’s currently working with (a knitted, patterned jumpsuit can never be a good idea). Marina, of Marina and the Diamonds, looked 50’s fab and we almost didn’t recognize her with her newly platinum blonde locks. Pixie Geldof looked understated yet cool in a bias cut maxi dress. Ellie Goulding wore a navy jersey jumpsuit that was really quite sophis. Naomi Campbell seemed a little out of place to be honest, but worked a monochrome ensemble that looked Chanel.

London Fashion Week: Topshop Unique, SS12 Show

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

We were incredibly excited to be invited to the Topshop show. This has become one of THE events of London Fashion Week. Its amazing really that a high street brand can create this much buzz, but lets face it, Topshop is not really like any other highstreet fashion label. Not only through their collaborations with the most cutting edge British brands in their Boutique offer, but also through their own, and very well named, Unique collection, they display design credentials that genuinely deserve to be presented amongst the rest of London Fashion Week’s collections. There’s also the addition of their sponsorship which enables the NEWGEN designers to be shown in such style as well as show in a stunning space (this year we were back in Waterloo’s defunct Eurostar terminal).

Headed up by the brilliant Karen Bonser and styled by Katie Grand, the Unique team created a truly unique vision for S/S 2012. Last season they encouraged us all to embrace our inner puppy, and this season they took us on an equally imaginative journey. Supported by a hip hop heavy soundtrack, Toppers decided to channel the glamour of Cleopatra should she have been reborn in to the mid 80’s b-boy scene of New York. Yes, that is Cleopatra, represented by Elizabeth Taylor, rocking gold embellished streetwear that features sacred Egyptian motifs. I did tell you it was unique… Throw in some more 80’s oriented references with a touch of Body Map’s monochrome and some Rifat Ozbek inspired club cool and you have a really strong and energetic direction. Here’s some shots- my own so excuse the quality (if you want to see more hit up Style.com).

Following this post we have one dedicated to the Celebrity heavy FROW at the Topshop show. There was an awe inspiring caste of characters, including Anna Wintour, which alone if enough to show that this is a show to be taken seriously.
