Blink Arts- Treasure Trail

When wondering around Portobello the other Friday, we treated ourselves to a quick 5 minute stop in to the Cloth Shop– always a treasure trove of textiles oriented inspiration. We were stopped in our tracks by the window display. Its always beautifully considered and innovative, but this time it was extra specially enchanting. The shop front featured these ethereal little creatures. It turns out that they are part of ‘Streetlight’, an artwork instillation project which creates a trail along Portobello Road, under the Westway flyover and up to Golborne Road.

This particular instillation features the work of Julie Goldsmith. Here’s what inspired her to create this particular collection of creatures, quoted from the ‘Streetlight’ website:

“I regularly scour the neighbourhood for treasures and materials that I use in my work: Portobello market; modern Gothic spaces under the Westway; the wilderness of foxes and birds, wild flowers and graffiti art; and,┬áthe Great Western Railway and the Grand union canal. This landscape is where my carved figures and creatures are first imagined, glinting in the shadows.”

Its the perfect escape from the drudgery of recession retailing, inspiring dreamy graphics, new motifs and highlighting the importance of creativity. Let your dream life become a reality and create a fairy story of your own…
